Our daily addictions...

I can really relate to today's XKCD. That is so me. Except for the imminent Death Star destroying, obviously. (Except for Reddit and CNN and Facebook, really, but there are always other sites for the same effect.)

I'm surprised TV Tropes isn't featuring in this. Ah, TV Tropes, thou brightener of many a boring work day! Of course, these days I rather tend to get stuck on pages like Familienplanung.de or Kindergesundheit-info instead. OH GODS I'M GROWING OLD AND CONSERVATIVE ~~~ but at least I'm doing it online...

Of course, what does that mean, these days? Not long ago my grandmother asked me whether I, too, thought she needed "a Facebook". Apparently several of her friends have been pestering her to get one. Brave new world.

That was what initially got me to look at TV Tropes. Astonishingly enough, I had completely avoided it up to then - but of course after THAT I was curious...

All of my in-laws are on Facebook: my husband's cousins, aunts, uncles, parents, and grandparents. The only person I've had to block from my wall is my mother-in-law, because she was basically stalking my Facebook (looking for pictures of things we might have gone to, etc) to call and harass my husband about how horrible he was.

And I can't look at TV Tropes, 'cause just one link and suddenly it's four hours later...

So far, only one member of my family (that I regularly meet/ talk to) is on Facebook, and she just has the account to keep in touch with the distant family members. I don't have one either (I hate the site with an almost holy passion, heh heh) and no one (I hope) knows about this LJ... That's why I had a different account for when I was in Japan! Online paranoia is still common around us. So I was really surprised when my die-hard offline grandmother of all people asked me about Facebook. (I told her that no, unless she felt she was missing out on something, she wouldn't have to get an account. Good grief, she doesn't even have a computer!)

I think that's what happens to everybody. ^^

So at least I'm not the only person with no willpower to keep from refreshing her flist *g*
