So the Brexit apparently is going to happen.

I honestly can't believe it. When I wrote up my snarky illustrated commentary, I was honestly convinced that in the end, the "Remain" voters would win out anyway. I honestly thought that in spite of the noisy and, alas, violent debate, in the end the majority of Brits would want to stay. I honestly couldn't imagine this ending any other way.

Well, apparently it has. I still can't believe it. Part of me hopes that they're gonna count another couple of votes they've overlooked so far and that's going to tip the scales. Or that there's some other kind of mistake. (Well, it clearly is a mistake, but you know what I mean.) I genuinely can't imagine Britain leaving the EU.

I'd like to say something intelligent, but really, the only thing that comes to mind right now is, Shit.

I genuinely can't comprehend it. The idea is so far removed from my understanding of the world in general and Europe in particular that I feel like I woke up in a dystopian alternative universe. I'm still waiting to snap back.

I'm with you. I don't even know what to say and I just feel so very sorry for the younger generation that has to bear what the older did in voting for out.

I think you hit the nail on the head though, in saying that the older generation longed for "days gone by": an NHS that worked, pensions which were stable and enough to live off, and all that stuff. And they looked for the easy scapegoat (the EU), rather than taking a critical look at what really caused the decline (the Tories) of their "once great Empire" (which, frankly, only ever lived inside their heads). Additionally, this may also have been people implicitly saying they are not happy with the government they got after the 2014 elections. That's often how these things work.

And none of it changes the fact that I'm upset. I'm angry. And I'm frustrated, because can't people for once in their lives think of someone else? Thanks, curmudgeons. You got to live out your lives as part of the world's greatest peace project, and now that you're gotten every last drop out of it, and it's time to pass it on, you're not willing?

It amazes me that they're going to secede on less than a 2% majority... a simple plurality vote. In the US, hardly anything is decided on a simple plurality!

I'm also wondering what this means for Scotland and Northern Ireland, which overwhelmingly voted to remain. Will there be another Scots independence referendum? Will we see a United Ireland? For that matter, will we see a United Celtic Republic? The mind fair boggles.

Nicola Sturgeon (leader of the Scottish government) has already indicated she's exploring all options to remain in the EU, including a new referendum on independence. Sinn Fein has indicated something similar in Northern Ireland.

Considering that after the last Scottish independence referendum, the overwhelming argument for "Stay with Britain" was that Scotland wanted to remain in the EU... yes, I fully expect another referendum. Who knows what might happen.
Spain is already offering Gibraltar to take them back, too...
