Work Displacement
Jan. 22nd, 2006 12:18 pmIt's time for Things Lyra Learned Whilst Cramming For The Intermediate Exam again!
1. British Anthropologists have, by definition, ridiculous names. That doesn't mean I'm allowed to ridicule them.
(Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard, I ask you. And please to remember that name correctly, brain. Not EdmundPevensie, not Ewan McGregor, not even Evan Rosier. ['even Evan'. Hahah.] EDWARD. EVAN. EVANS-PRITCHARD.
The Brits have a cruel sense of humour.)
2. Unilineal Evolutionism ≠ Neo-Evolutionism. Because Neo-Evolutionism is more related to Neo-Marxism. Which is a form of Cultural Materialism. Got it?
3. 'cross cousins' is an anthropologically relevant term. 'parallel cousins' is an anthropologically relevant term. 'totally cousins' is not.
Also, a good kinship diagram shouldn't look anything like the House of Finwë. Even though that would really help with getting through the 45 minutes.
4. Laws and Customs of the Eldar is NOT an ethnography. Beren's Silmaril is NOT a good example of bridewealth.
5. Actually, they are, but they're not relevant for this exam.
6. In other words, stop looking for fanfic.
7. Also, stop producing ideas for cultures of your own. Subcreation is not part of the exam. Yes, it's fun. Yes, there's at least one fat plotbunny on every single page of the textbook. IGNORE THEM. (Ouch, my feet.)
8. Stop updating your LJ and get back to work, dammit.

Date: 2006-01-22 11:31 am (UTC)I know EXACTLY what you mean. I failed miserably at an exam on the pre-cortez indian civilizations, bacuase the whole topic made me want to write a D&D setting... *Sigh*
