oloriel: (tolkien - tell them I ain't coming back)

Or: Fate hath decided: The next update in my long-overdue LJ catch-up will be... *DUN DUN DUN* the Mittelerde-Fest picspam!
With some commentary in lieu of any sort of proper travelogue.

Many pictures (thumbnails) under the cut, you have been warned )

Oof! Let's see when I manage to post the next batch of photos. Or just a general old update, whatever. Did I mention that the days are just packed?
oloriel: (LARP - Drachenfest/Sapientiam/ZdL: Papa)

What the title says!

We're back from MEF and DF, as alive, crazy and overwhelmed as usual. My f-list is presumably full of ToME planning stuff (note: it's really awesome and useful that I no longer need worry about anyone confusing MEF and MEFA!) so I won't even try to catch up with that, so:
If I missed anything important going on in your lives or on the web or whatever in the past two weeks that you'd like me to take note of, please comment here with a link or a summary or whatever you feel suitable. Thank you!

There's a heap of cleaning to do and a heap of stuff to sort, and then of course there are the photos and the attempts at writing at least a brief sort of report, so NOT having to read through two weeks worth of backlog will be helpful anyway.

Happy belated birthday, [livejournal.com profile] laurenia!
Hope you had a great day.

Also, Happy belated birthday to my baby boy!
Everyone keeps asking what special thing we did for his birthday, and my answer is "It mostly went by", which is, of course, not strictly speaking, true. His birthday was the day of the Festfrieden (the general peace agreement of the festival) at the DF so there were many things going on, and he garnered congratulations by all sorts of fantasy people, pirates, knights, fairies, avatars, alchemists, mages, scribes and everything in between. Which is probably special for any normal person. Just not during DF week.
A year already. Can't quite believe it. Where did the time go?

Not that I've been particularly active just now, but it's going to get even less: I'll be away from home & offline until the 22nd and then again until the 29th. Middle-earth Festival first, Drachenfest laters. BOOYAH.
So no worries, it's just vacations. Just means I won't be able to give my invaluable opinion on whatever topic pops up within the next 11 days ;)
Take care, don't break the internet, and don't bring another thriving fandom institution crashing down while I'm gone! [/snark]
oloriel: (tolkien - tell them I ain't coming back)

Guess who finally got a confirmation e-mail for her MEF ticket? That's right, that's me!

\o/ \o/ \o/

Leuk, here we come! Next summer will be epic. w00t!

- - -

In less delightful news, my car is now gone. No, I didn't have an accident, it's just tear and wear and old age and rational thinking. Now I took it to our friendly neighbourhood garage and won't get it back. Feel like a traitor. Longer entry will no doubt follow some day later.
oloriel: (tolkien - cooking >:D)

oloriel: (lotr - raise to me the parting glass)

Man sollte sich also möglichst jetzt mal entscheiden.

Also. Entscheiden! Sonntag vormerken! Anmelden! Wohlfühlen!
oloriel: (Fëanor made me take this one I swear.)

... or rather "somethings", but that's ungrammatical, so.

* The date for next year's Drachenfest has been announced and against all odds it's not at the same time as the Mittelerdefest, but a week later! I've been waiting for - and dreading - the announcement because it was pretty likely that both events would fall around the same weekend and then I'd have had to decide for just one (that is, for the MEF...). As I'm already missing this year's DF for obvious reasons, that'd have been very sad. So yay for actually being able (time-wise; anything else we'll see) to do both! \o/

* Five of my stories have been nominated for this year's MEFAs. To be sure, with the majority of them I'm pretty much certain they don't stand a chance - one might just get lucky, it's got Fingon in it and contains no overly complicated or controversial concepts, which always makes for crowd-pleasers - but it's still nice people liked them well enough to nominate them. Of course, as in past years, there are some stories where I'd secretly hoped someone would nominate them and nobody did (I tell myself that of course people loved them but didn't remember just now because they're old stuff :P), and as I despise self-nomination and fail at self-advertising, I'll just have to suck that up. Ah well. Five noms is still awesome, particularly as I've been a very unproductive fanficcer these past months.

* Today I managed to catch up with my gardening plan for the kitchen part of the garden, i.e. I managed to finish weeding all nine veggie patches and sow everything that had to be sown by June. As it's still June (if just barely), I consider this a splendid success. We'll see whether I'll manage to take care of the rest of the garden soonish, too, but there's less pressure - although all those spreading weeds are a pest, they're not interfering with anything important. Now I just have to harvest and use up the redcurrants and blackcurrants, as well as all those ripe woodland strawberries. And figure out what to do with my surplus tomato plants - this year, I actually have too many. (When you sow tomatoes, you bring out at least twice as many seeds as you want plants, because usually at least half of them won't grow anyway. This year, all of them grew, and two so powerfully that I had to take slippings, and these slippings in turn all took root, and then I got another plant from the uphill neighbour which I couldn't politely refuse, so now I have rather more plants than I bargained for -- which I guess is good, but I have to re-think my initial plans to make room for all of them.) Eh well, if they all manage to bring me ripe tomatoes, I shan't complain further!

* Am having an "actionism!" phase. Unfortunately it's neither typical nesting ("CLEAN ALL THE THINGS!") nor fannish actionism, but rather (mostly LARPish... it's that time of the year) creative stuff for which I lack the materials or skillz or both. Might nonetheless be tempted to try. At any rate, motivation is a good thing, even if it's kinda pointless motivation. Particularly if it's motivation for something other than sewing (current creative project of choice is "Pimp my cheap IKEA nursing bag!", which will result in something reasonably awesome, but my sewing finger is pretty raw by now, so I'll need a break after that). So there we go.

* Oh and I made carrot cake yesterday, with some variations from the original recipe (WTF what kind of crazy person puts ground apricot kernels into a cake? Don't those contain, like, Prussic acid?) and from my first attempt at the recipe (which was tasty enough but kinda dry). Added more baking powder, replaced apricot kernels with sweet almonds (I just trust those more, 'k?), replaced maize grits with just more "normal" flour (well, wholemeal spelt flour, but that's still more normal than maize grits :P), added chopped apple. Refused to mess around with the eggs as the recipe demanded (in the original recipe, you're supposed to separate the whites from the yolks, beat the whites, beat the yolks and mix them with all the other ingredients, then put the beaten whites back in. I assume this is supposed to make the cake fluffy or something, but as I said it was pretty dry nonetheless. So this time around I just put the eggs in whole from the start (I mean, without the shells, clearly, but whites and yolks together, yes?) because I hate separating eggs and certainly won't do it if it doesn't serve some sort of point. And I even used less eggs than the recipe called for because I only had two eggs left and our uphill neighbours' chickens had an unproductive week. AND IT WAS AWESOME. Not the least bit dry, instead sweet and fruity and juicy. Despite the spelt flour, too! Screw you, absurdly complicated recipe with your weird ingredients. I MADE YOU SIMPLER AND BETTER.

And that concludes today's random joyspam. Not a "Five things that made me happy" meme participant, but it might as well be...

THERE WILL BE A MITTELERDEFEST 2012!!!!!1!eleventyone!!!! YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!

EDIT: After the MEF '07, I told my trusty LJ that "likely one day when I'm old and have children of my own I'll find out that there's a MEF, say, 2015, and then I'll run around the house squeeing like an idiot. (And then I'll drag the kidlets along to Leuk.)"
Prophetic, prophetic...

Dear body,

The amount of endorphines you are producing upon reading this rather simple message is extremely ridiculous. Look at the adorable little fangirl you are. What is your son going to think?

(A son who will quite likely have to celebrate his first birthday in Leuk, looking at the date...)

Amused love,
The brain

In other news, I'm back from my ultra-contrast holiday. Will catch up and possibly tell boring holiday stories later. Apologies for the outburst above, but it springs from genuine feeling.

Being an account of [livejournal.com profile] ladyelleth's and [livejournal.com profile] oloriel's journey to and adventures at the Middle-earth Festival three weeks ago which I should have written down back then, but as always work, the house and assorted projects have eaten my time, so... well. I'll try now.
With photos!

Only in English for now - I may translate later - in four successive journal entries. I think. If this works.

Oh, and under a cut for length.

I am back! And alive! Although I caught some kind of stomach bug and feel all queasy. At least it was courteous enough to wait until the MEF was over.

The MEF, of course, was wonderfully brilliant (and such an excellent place to be in the Fëanorian week, too!). Prepare for the gigantic picspam of doom.
Allusions by Rhavin make me fear it was supposedly the last MEF ever, but then again they already said that after the MEF '03. And the MEF '05. As I told [livejournal.com profile] ladyelleth, likely one day when I'm old and have children of my own I'll find out that there's a MEF, say, 2015, and then I'll run around the house squeeing like an idiot. (And then I'll drag the kidlets along to Leuk.)

Ephemeris and picspam will come later this week. Now I gotta get back to work. And try to get rid of the stomach bug.

Komiksy! Das Ende der Brennnesselepisode.

One day I'll do these in English too. Probably.

The Middle-earth Festival programme is out, and it is so much love and glee that I've been grinning like an idiot for an hour now. Aside from the usual suspects like medieval dances, swordsmanship, archery, hobbit cooking*, tablet weaving, chainmail-making and the like, there will be a basic smithying workshop, a sculpting workshop and a bronze-casting workshop.

You're really catering to the Fëanorian crowd this year, OKcha, aren't you?
I approve.

In other news, tomorrow begin the LoCreMo and the Back to Middle-earth Month (using this link because I'm too lazy to search for the original link from last year now >_>). The days are just packed! ^_^

*As in "cooking the stuff that hobbits eat", not as in "cooking hobbits".

15 minutes left till registration for the MEF starts. *wibble*

The involuntary vacations in Ulm were more enjoyable than expected. A co-student of Jörg was turning 40, as was his wife, plus they had their third son seven weeks ago, which made for many reasons to celebrate, so we went there. I got to ride in a fuell cell-powered car, walk around the Blautopf and climb through a subterranean system of caverns (and let me say that the comparison of a subterranean lake to a Moschtfässle ("a barrel of must") was quite amusing). Luckily, Jörg's co-students are quite interesting people. XD

When listening to "Smoke on the Water", however, I am NOT permitted to think of Losgar. And certainly not permitted to imagine the most prominent notes played on Maglor's harp. Well, if the RingStars ever make a Silmarillion musical...

MIDDLE-EARTH FESTIVAL 2007 IS GOING TO HAPPEN.

In Leuk, as always.

We apologize for the glee and go back to tidying our workspace.

In other news, I've seen the Middle-earth Festival program and I am SO. JEALOUS.
Damn these stupid exams, damn them to the Void.

*headwalls*

NEIDISCH.
Verdammt sei diese Zwischenprüfung, verdammt, verdammt.

Which are, admittedly, of a quality that hardly deserves that name, and probably don't mean too much to someone who wasn't there. And it's all highly unprofessional, too.
After these words of warning...
Almost Harmless )

Argh. Stupid exams. I want to write. I want to draw and paint. I have to pack my baggage for the vacations. And there are about 200 kanji that I don't know half as well as I should like - not to mention the compounds... *groan*
oloriel: (Default)

*seufz*

Sorry that I still didn't translate. I got the fotos, but I won't scan them today, and it's not really likely I'll do it tomorrow either because of the exams next week. I've got way too much to learn and repeat... I hope I'll manage before the vacations.
*sigh*
