oloriel: A fluffy grey bunny next to the words "write me". (writing woes)
Fanfic writer titles meme, seen all over my flist.

no, not the Lockdown meme. An icon meme! Snatched from [personal profile] ysilme.

1. Comment to this entry saying 'Today we're cancelling the apocalypse' (or whatever you want to, really) and I will pick 3 of your icons/userpics.
2. Make an entry in your own journal (or just reply if you prefer) and talk about the icons I picked.

These are the ones [personal profile] ysilme chose (over on LJ, where I have a rather larger choice of icons than I do here):

This is from the movie Everything Is Iluminated, which has some amazing cinematography, including this surreal little screenshot. I didn't have a meme sheep icon at the time, so I used it as a meme goat. You could probably put a lot of interpretation into that, but the sad truth is that I just thought it looked neat.

The Matrix, but make it Elvish. That's pretty much all there is to this one. I think it was inspired by a conversation in an online RPG. I animated it myself. Make the niche jokes you want to see in the world, etc.

This is a dig at those "Jesus is my homeboy" (or w/ever) bumper stickers. Basically a take on the premise of American Gods (or the Percy Jackson series, apparently) that ancient gods are still around, just adapting to new circumstances more or less succesfully. Clearly, that would also apply to the Valar (although they're Powers, not gods - all the more reason to be still around! Vairë seemed like someone who, from weaver of historical tapestries, would easily adapt to digital weaving - in short, she'd do fine as a web admin. A bit of silliness that, due to the vast amount of icons that LJ permits me, never had to make room for more recent jokes.

And that's those explained!

My snow photos all turned out crappy because I forgot to adjust the camera's sensitivity to light (is that the right word? w/e). So instead of a self-indulgent picspam, have a self-indulgent Ask Meme! Stolen this from [personal profile] independence1776.

1. What made you start writing fanfic?
2. Which of your own fanfics have you reread the most?
3. Describe the differences between your first fanfic and your most recent fanfic.
4. Do you think your style has changed over time? How so?
5. You’ve posted a fic anonymously. How would someone be able to guess that you’d written it?
6. Name three stories you found easy to write.
7. Name three stories you found difficult to write.
8. What’s your ratio of hits to kudos?
9. What do your fic bookmarks say about you?
10. What’s a theme that keeps coming up in your writing?
11. What kind of relationships are you most interested in writing?
12. For E-rated fic, what are some things your characters keep doing?
13. Name three favorite characters to write.
14. You’re applying for the fanfic writer of the year award. What five fanfics do you put in your portfolio?
15. Question of your choice!

Ask one or several in the comments and I'll answer!

I didn't manage to do the end-of-the-year meme "between years" because I was grading papers instead, and then I was on vacation, so I'm doing it a week late. The new year is so young that it's still fair game, I think. As usual, this is probably going to be full of moping and melancholy! Ye have been warned!

Cut for length as usual. )

Well! This may actually have been the most... positive... of these memes that I've ever done! Uh-oh. Now I'm a bit worried. It won't last, will it?
oloriel: A few lines of Tengwar calligraphy. (blatant tolkienism)
Stealing the idea from [personal profile] independence1776!

Like Indy, I only got one ask on Tumblr to this one, so maybe this here is a better place for it. I'll c/p the answers I gave to the one on Tumblr into the first comment, in case anyone's interested!
Questions that are struck out have already been answered.

(I reblogged this on Tumblr a few days ago and only one person asked me anything, so I figured I'd put it here, too. I'm copy/pasting my answer to the already-asked questions in the first comment.)
oloriel: (instead of sheep)
Quick, let's have a stoopid meme, stolen from the f-list. I'm sure I've done this before, but that was years ago, so I can do it again.

Two Things Meme )

WELL WASN'T THAT EXCITING! Now I go back to my sewing. Or possibly to writing? Decisions, decisions...
oloriel: (tolkien - defying gravity)

You know, looking back at the past years' memes, they're always kinda depressing in tone and expressing the hope that the new year is going to be better. Then it's followed by another shit year. 2016 certainly was another shit year. I'm starting to loose hope that things are going to get better with a different number, tbh, but what can you do?

So, as usual, the end-of-year meme. A few days early this time because I guess I just can't wait for the year to be over. (I'm jinxing it, aren't I. JUST KIDDING 2016 YOU HAVE TWO DAYS LEFT TO SHOW WHAT A TOTALLY GREAT YEAR YOU ARE.)

Cut for length. )

So that's that. Bye bye 2016, never come back.
oloriel: (Patrick's Rune: Time for Heroism)
Happy New Year!

Here, have a picture I took in the garden this morning just to show you what an effed up year 2015 was, including the weather. (Hint: Roses normally flower from June til October in these parts. In December/January, they shouldn't even have leaves.)

I don't think I did that End-of-year-meme in a couple of years because it ended up sounding too depressive. This wasn't a good year so it's probably going to sound worse, but I'll do the meme anyway. For future reference or something.

Under the cut for length and general uninterestingness )

Right. That was that. Onward, upward!
oloriel: (if there's no movie about it...)

I tend to say that I don't care for TV shows, so this is a good way of proving me wrong. Or possibly right, we will see!

Here is how it works:
- Bold all of the following TV shows of which you've seen 3 or more episodes.
- Italicize a show if you're positive you've seen every episode.
- Asterisk * if you have at least one full season on tape or DVD
- If you want, add up to 3 additional shows (keep the list in alphabetical order). I have added more than 3 because honestly, there's so much stuff missing from this list it's ridiculous. And not just recent things but old stuff, too! Curse you, Americentrism!

Loooooong list under the cut, proceed at own risk )

OK. I don't care for TV shows. I mean, I've missed out on most of the stuff that everyone in my generation has seen, caught up a bit when I was a student. These days, I tend to catch a lot more than I ever thought I would, but still not nearly as much as I could. But even I could see how incomplete this list was. I mean, I accept that some things are just more recent than this list is, but how come Sesame Street was missing?!
oloriel: (instead of sheep)

So I'm snagging this one from [livejournal.com profile] barbardin, because it just happened to come my way.

The 3 Things Meme )

THREE PEOPLE WHO SHOULD COMPLETE THIS SURVEY:
Oh, it's a survey now, not a meme! Serious business! Anyway, if you want to feel tagged, feel tagged.
oloriel: (instead of sheep)

Because why write entries I should've written weeks ago when I can waste time on a meme?

Name a fandom you know (or you think) I might know, and I will tell you these things.

1. The character I first fell in love with
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer
6. The character I would totally smooch
7. The character I’d want to be like
8. The character I’d slap
9. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I despise

- - -
Actually, there are not many fandoms for which I can answer these questions. While there are a few fandoms and series that I'm at least vaguely familiar with, in most of them I'm not emotionally invested enough to have favourite characters or know about common pairings or so. But hey, we can try!

Done:
- The Lord of the Rings (requested by [livejournal.com profile] samtyr)
- The History of Middle-earth (requested by [livejournal.com profile] shadowbrides)
- The Silmarillion (requested by [livejournal.com profile] elenbarathi)
- Firefly (requested by [livejournal.com profile] lainvess)

You gals are almost as predictable as I am. ;)
oloriel: (random - you and what army?)

... of free software didn't turn out to work after all, here's another one:
from [livejournal.com profile] juno_magic.

2013 Creative Pay-It-Forward:

The first five people to comment on this post will receive from me, some time this year, a gift – perhaps a handbound notebook, or a picture I painted, or a candle I made – a surprise! There will be no warning and it will happen whenever the mood strikes me. The catch? Those five people should make the same offer…

(The other catch is, of course, that you get no say in what I make for you. WHO KNOWS WHAT THE TERRIFYING DEPTHS OF THE LYRABRAIN WILL COME UP WITH?)
Anyway. Go. Comment?

ETA: If I don't know your address, you might want to tell me that. *sheepish look* Via e-mail or LJ message or whatever. You could also screen your own comment, I believe that is possible? Never mind, I'll just set the default for this post to "screened". There you go.

ETA ETA: All spots are gone!
1. [livejournal.com profile] jokergirl
2. [livejournal.com profile] barbardin
3. [livejournal.com profile] sermanya (und oooh, schöne Bilder bzw schöne Bücher! ^^)
4. [livejournal.com profile] allamistako
5. [livejournal.com profile] chili_das_schaf
(6. [livejournal.com profile] flower_star, maybe I'll manage something for you too)
oloriel: (tolkien - Come to Mandos - we have DSL)

Don't worry, I'm not going to do it.

However, other people are. And that's perfectly fine.

However, as soon as more than one entry by people going "I'm going to take the 100 Things Challenge" with its huge banner showed up on my flist, I couldn't help but go and check what it was all about, and then shake my head. And then [livejournal.com profile] nimielle mentioned that she had a whole rage/ramble boiling inside of her because of it.
That sparked this entry.

The thing is, I like the idea.
I agree with the OP that many LJs have fallen too quiet or turned into little more than Tumblr accounts with better comment functions, and I like the idea that people write proper LJ entries again on a topic of their choice.
So that's cool.

What's not cool:
It doesn't reach the right people.
Don't get me wrong: Those of you who participate in the meme are lovely people, and have chosen interesting topics, and I'm looking forward to reading your entries.
BUT: You haven't abandoned LJ anyway. You're writing entries anyway. Now, you're just going to write a hundred additional entries (or replacement entries? - I hope not!) on the topic of your choice. That is, I repeat, cool.

But I'm sure all of us have people on our f-lists who have fallen into radio silence, or who are only active on [insert other platform of your choice], or who used to write great thoughtful LJ posts and now don't have the time anymore. I'm sure we all have LJ-friends where we think, "DAMN, I wish whoever would write one of his/her brainstorming/art/random/whatever entries again." And it just doesn't happen.
THOSE are the people this meme is predominantly geared towards, as I understand it. Not towards those who write proper LJ entries anyway (just without a connecting topic, or, at any rate, without a previously chosen connecting topic), but towards those who don't - for whatever reason.

Of course, those are also the people who probably won't do the meme. :P

So from where I stand, it's kind of counter-productive. Well, not counter-productive, as it isn't keeping anyone from properly blogging. Just preaching to the choir, I guess.

Of course, I'm lucky. Unlike [livejournal.com profile] nimielle, I have no-one on my f-list [yet] who uses this meme to post one-liners (at best with a picture attached) in the name of the "100 Things" thing. The mind boggles. Have these people actually read the explanation that comes with the challenge, or would they have required a Twitter-ese translation to get it?

[/snark]
oloriel: (and whither then I cannot say)

a.k.a. fannish ramblings, feel free to disregard.

I was planning to put together a little overview of what I did during this year's B2MeM. I probably wouldn't have done it, however, so I'm really glad that [livejournal.com profile] aliana1 made a little questionnaire. It's always easier to answer other people's questions.

So here goes...
...under the cut for the unconcerned )

And now, it's Back-to-Business month. More or less. I hope it'll still leave me a chance to continue a few of those WiPs - and to read other people's responses, because seriously, SO MUCH POTENTIAL!

Und dann macht man einen Eintrag darüber. In diesem Fall unterm Cut, wegen der Länge. Und zur Abwechslung mal auf Deutsch. )

Das war's! Interessenten?
oloriel: (instead of sheep)

I've seen this one go around; now I've been tagged by [livejournal.com profile] rahja. Ok, why not, it's been a while!

The Rules:

1. People who have been tagged must write the answers on their blog and replace any question they dislike with a new, original question.

For a given value of "original", I hope.

2. Tag six people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.
Yeah, this is the one I'm replacing with "No need for tagging. Whoever wants to can play along."

On to the meme... )

Wasn't that exciting now! Back to sorting pics.
oloriel: (for delirium was once delight)

I forgot to do this last year (early this year... whatever), but that's no excuse for slacking again. Besides, it's fun to look back at these things after a few years. So this is a sort of investment into the future. ;)

2010 in retrospect )

Well! You all have yourselves a nice party tonight! See you next year.
