Actually, there are not many fandoms for which I can answer these questions. While there are a few fandoms and series that I'm at least vaguely familiar with, in most of them I'm not emotionally invested enough to have favourite characters or know about common pairings or so. But hey, we can try!

Where to I start? Gandalf, Strider, Galadriel, Éomer, Éowyn, Faramir, Sam, Ioreth. I think that's about right.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
Sam. I felt pretty indifferent about him in the beginning, but as the story went on, he grew on me for obvious reasons. Now, I think he rocks the whole story and did all along. Even Sean Astin's sometimes hamfisted acting couldn't change that.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t
"Everyone else" is such a big word. But I really don't give a damn about either Legolas or Glorfindel, and I know that many people adore those two. Ok, let's be honest. Glorfindel I mostly just don't care about. But Legolas? Due to over-exposure in the movies, stupid oliphaunt stunts etc., and the really rabid sort of fangirl, I hate the poor fellow - even in the books, where he hasn't actually done anything wrong.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
Hm. Do I love anyone whom everyone else hates? I can't think of anyone. Well, I don't know whether Ioreth has many fans, and I really like her. So we'll let her count.
5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer
*ponders* I don't think my feelings about the LotR characters have changed that much, really. I don't like Arwen, but I never did, so she doesn't work here, either. I can give you a character I used to dislike, but don't any longer: Aunty Lobelia!
6. The character I would totally smooch
Faramir. Book!Faramir for character, but while movie!Faramir doesn't actually look like Faramir, I still think David Wenham is a pretty attractive fellow, so either Faramir for looks.
7. The character I’d want to be like
I know I'd always chafe against the constraints of society and modesty and blah, so I wouldn't be happy as Samwise. Galadriel, then?
8. The character I’d slap
Saruman. Gríma. And movie!Elrond.
9. A pairing that I love
Éowyn/Faramir; Aragorn/Faramir (with or without Éomer)
10. A pairing that I despise
"Despise" is too hard a word. But I really don't particularly care about Aragorn/Arwen. Or just about Arwen, really. It's unfair, I know, but I never got to like her, and her over-kitsched pouty scenes in the movies have ruined her for me entirely.

Not counting those who made it into the published Sil... Eriol comes to mind first, so we'll let him be it.

Hm. Did the HoME make me change my mind about anyone? If we include the Unfinished Tales, then I definitely wouldn't have expected to love Númenor as much as I do now, but that's not a character.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t
Another "not a character, but a place" thing - I really don't feel particularly inspired by Gondolin. Shameful, I know! But I can't muster more than a half-hearted interest in the Rolling Stone Singing Rock. :P
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
I still like Beren and Lúthien. :P
5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer
*ponders* Can't think of any. Aldarion if we include the Unfinished Tales - I loved him in the beginning but grew to dislike him along with Erendis, so to say.
6. The character I would totally smooch
Not counting the ones from the Sil, I guess The Lost Road Alboin/Elendil would be it.
7. The character I’d want to be like
Eriol - not necessarily because of his character, but because of his experiences. :D
8. The character I’d slap
MOSTLY THE DAMN AUTHOR FOR STARTING AND NEVER FINISHING ALL THAT STUFF AND BEING UNABLE TO MAKE UP HIS MIND. ALSO HIS SON THE EDITOR.
9. A pairing that I love
Aredhel/Celegorm - the only pairing Tolkien officially denies! XD
10. A pairing that I despise
I really, really think Varda could've found a worthier (and less vapid) husband than Manwë. :P

Date: 2013-01-28 05:36 pm (UTC)IIRC, on my first read I was sort of fascinated by Maedhros (first by the sound of his name, and then the awesome rescue story); but I only "fell in love" very late in the book -- with Eärendil. I'm still very fond of him (even though I want to slap him, too). Every now and then, my brain returns into Eärendil fangirl modus. It probably needs that to recover from the overwhelming Fëanorian presence ;)
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
Fëanor and his sons. On my first read, I pretty much followed the book's bias, so they were very clever and brilliant people but mostly villains. Needless to say, by now I'm firmly in the Fëanorian camp and not likely to leave it again...
3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t
Again, "everyone else" is saying too much. But I know Ecthelion, Glorfindel and Erestor are hugely popular, and I really can't get myself interested in them.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
"Everyone else" is... anyway, I have a soft spot for Elwing, and I know she's despised by many others. I find this vaguely funny, because the biggest argument against her always seems to be "... she abandoned her children!!!". And it always comes from the same people who complain that Tolkien's female characters always only get to do stereotypically female stuff, or if they don't (like Aredhel), they're vilified and die messy deaths. Then there's Elwing, who gets to do something very un-female (putting a cause higher than her children) and YET is not vilified in the books - and everyone (including the feminists) pile on her. It amuses me, but it also makes me kind of sad.
(I do think Elwing makes some grave mistakes. But I don't think she deserves the hatred she seems to get from many fans.)
I also like Lúthien. And Caranthir.
5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer
"Love" is saying to much. But in the beginning, I really found all the Valar quite nice and capable, and now I have serious doubts about them. Manwë in particular I really, really dislike. HOW CAN YOU PUT A GUY WHO DOESN'T COMPREHEND EVIL IN CHARGE OF THE WORLD. THAT'S IDIOTIC.
6. The character I would totally smooch
They'd all kill me if I got too close, so none of 'em! If I were Nerdanel, I would smooch Fëanor, and if I were Fingon, I'd smooch Maedhros. :P
7. The character I’d want to be like
Nerdanel, or maybe Haleth.
8. The character I’d slap
Ahahahah! This is the Silmarillion. As much as I love everyone, it's easier to list those who don't need a good slapping! That would be... *ponders* *ponders* *ponders* *ponders* ... I guess Eluréd and Elurín? They never had a chance to do anything stupid :P

Míriel/Indis, Fëanor/Nerdanel, Maedhros/Fingon, Aredhel/Celegorm (AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME), Haleth/Caranthir, Beren/Lúthien (YES, I LIKE THEM, DEAL WITH IT), Elwing/Eärendil
10. A pairing that I despise
Aredhel/Eöl. I'm not overly excited about Dior/Nimloth, either, but that's mostly because Dior is boooooring and Nimloth always reminds me of a failed roleplaying experiment. :(

River. Initially, I just found her really annoying and weird? I only realised by and by how awesome she is underneath all the trauma.

I... can't think of any universally beloved Firefly character that I don't like, I think. I'm not all that excited about Simon, I guess; he's trying too hard. I know where it's coming from, but I know if I had to be around him in real life, I wouldn't be able to stop rolling my eyes.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
I don't think that applies. I mean, I kinda like Jayne, but it's not like everybody else hates him.
5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer
Saffron, I guess? I liked her when I was still buying into her innocent backwater maiden spiel (yes, it was OTT, but some things in Firefly are that and still are played straight), and still kinda liked her when we learned who she really is - a girl's gotta live - but on the third time around, she began to grate on my nerves. Sorry, Saffron.
6. The character I would totally smooch
KAYLEEEEEEE! Wash if Zoe wouldn't kill me.
7. The character I’d want to be like
Zoe. I mean, she's pretty much perfect.
8. The character I’d slap
Mal. There are loads of characters who deserve a good kicking, but Mal is a good guy with a big heart who EVERY NOW AND THEN WILL SAY SOMETHING INCREDIBLY STUPID. So he's the one who gets slapped.
9. A pairing that I love
Zoe/Wash; Mal/Inara; Kaylee/Inara
10. A pairing that I despise
I'm not active in the Firefly fandom, so I have no idea what pairings are fashionable there. I guess I wouldn't ship Jayne with anyone aboard Serenity
except Vera, so if any pairings in that direction exist, hell to the no? I also don't think River could be happy with anyone. :(
