It's about Henri IV of France and, subsequently, the Huguenot Wars and St. Bartholomew's Night and all that fun stuff, based on a novel by Heinrich Mann (a famous dead German writer), because dramatisations of the books of the Mann brothers were all the rage a year ago. ;)
