Offspring was caught sleeping (snuggling against the placenta, awww) so it didn't flail around as four weeks ago. Fortunately it was facing towards the outside today so sonography was rather more fruitful than last time. Everything appears normal and in good order. A few days ahead of the average - according to the data, the kid might thus be born a bit earlier than originally calculated. (As long as it doesn't pick my grandmother's birthday...)

So far the only potential problem is that my blood's slightly low on iron, not dramatically but I'll have to keep an eye on it. Well, that's not too hard.

Also!
Gyn: "You keep saying 'he' - already certain that it's a boy?"
Moi: "No idea, actually. I just say 'he' because fetus is grammatically masculine."
Gyn: "Ah, ok. Some mothers feel sure about what they're going to get so I thought you were one of them."
Moi: "Nope, no idea. People keep asking but it's just grammar."
Gyn: "Do you want to know?"
Moi: "Well if it can be seen, I don't mind knowing."
Gyn: *scans a little further down* "Oh look, a penis! Seems you can stick with 'he'."

(This just when I was slowly beginning to feel partial. Only yesterday I admitted to myself that I was hoping just a bit more that it would be a girl *g*)

You can't see it in the ultrasound print because by now Offspring is too large to fit into the image in one piece. Last check-up, it was about 6 cm "tall" - now it's 20. Within four weeks. DUDE.

Gyn also said that it was perfectly possible that I might feel it - him - move when I put my hand on my tummy (I wasn't certain whether I was imagining that or whether it was just my intestines or what). Soon I should also feel movement even when I don't specifically look for it. Squee!

Another three weeks and this my pregnancy will be halfway over. Time flies! O.ó

*It is. In German, too, so this is not my general humanist smart-assing. Although my gynaecologist, having studied medicine in this country, must have known the Latin bit anyway.

Hehe, I was sooooo certain I was having a girl with Aedan, when I found out he was a boy I was O.O! Refusing to overthink it this time! :P

Maybe it was grammatical foreshadowing ;) Good to see offspring is growing and looking fine (amazing how you can even see some facial features already). Any news on the namefront?

I can't deny that I'm hoping my firstborn will be a girl, too. I blame it on the lack of girls in my family.

Das ist so spannend! Ich glaube ja nicht, dass ich irgendwann mal Kinder haben (wollen) werde - wie denn auch, ohne potenziellen Vater - aber spannend ist es allemal. Es ist so faszinierend, was die Natur aus zwei einzelnen Zellen baut. Zack, schon hat es ein Geschlecht, ein Gesicht und nur ein klein bisschen später kommt's wahrscheinlich schon in die Pubertät und du fragst dich, wie das denn bitte jetzt so schnell passiert ist.

Hallo, kleiner Oloriel-Sohn *wink heftig*

Schade, dass er die Augen zu hat. So wie der aussieht, würde er sonst wahrscheinlich nicht nur zurück winken sondern auch noch mit den Fingern "Fötus, der" buchstabieren *G*

Wow, ultrasound scans have come a long way since I saw my kiddies' ones! And for the record, fetus and baby are both masculine words in Spanish, so, grammatically, it would have also been "he". Girls don't seem to have a chance...

The last ones I got were also rather fuzzy (and you could only see half its back and butt and a flailing arm anyway). I'm so excited that this batch is so clear, and even more excited about the lovely portrait! ^^

My mother was theoretising that it might be a boy because I wasn't sick at all, because apparently she was rather sick while pregnant with me but had no trouble at all with my brother. She'll be amused to hear that she was right!

My mom-in-law was amazed when she saw these, too. Back in her day they had none of this, apparently, so all she could do was tell her midwife how she felt and the midwife would check for the baby's heartbeat and everything else was guesswork. O.ó

In German, the words for "baby" and "child" are neutral (as are most diminutives), so people probably expected me to say "it" until I knew better. But "it" is so terribly clinical for precious little baby, I think! And because masculine nouns for people in German can often be used generically (e.g. Ärzte may mean "exclusively male doctors" or "female and male doctors") whereas feminine nouns for people definitely denote, well, female people (e.g. Ärztinnen means "exclusively female doctors" and nothing else)... well, I opted for something generically masculine without actually (necessarily) meaning someone male. Here goes my feminist cred! ;)

Once, in the mists of the lost past, I studied German. I know what you mean. Spanish nouns are the same: the masculine form is also the generic for a collection of males and females. or it was until PoliticalCorrectness-crazy politicians with nothing better to do started to demand the use of both nouns when referring to such a group. So, now, some people (not me!) will speak of "profesores y profesoras" or "senadores y senadoras", intead of "profesores" and "senadores" alone. What a waste...

I actually get the point in a general sense - although today we often feel that we don't need to be reminded that professors or senators can be male or female because duh, of course they are, historically that's an important step to remember. And of course there are some words where we still unconsciously expect a particular gender - for instance, if you told people that you have a really friendly dentist, many will probably assume that the dentist is male, whereas if you told them that a friendly nurse helped to make your hospital stay less depressing, they'd probably assume that the nurse was female - just because "doctor" is still associated with men, whereas "nurse" is predominantly associated with women. So in such cases it is still useful to remind people that dentists may be male or female, and the same goes for nurses. (Which is why in German texts, you often get Zahnärzte und -ärztinnen, or Krankenpfleger/innen. Or else a disclaimer that "For reasons of readability, this text will use the generic masculine form. This is intended to include both female and male practitioners..." etc.)
I am not actually a fan of all that disjunction and very often find it absurd, but I can see the basic point. I just think that it's cumbersome in practice. ^^

Amusingly, of course, the original meaning of the word discriminate is "to make a difference [between something and something else]". If instead of saying "profesores" or "Krankenpfleger" you say, "profesores y profesoras" or "Krankenpfleger/innen", then what are you doing? You are making a difference between male and female, ergo - you discriminate...

Ah, the joys of language use.

Precisely, you are aggravating the issue, which is a legacy from using a language which uses genders. The "-os y -as" just sounds appalling.
