I have a house that direly needs cleaning. I spend the kids' naptime in order to try and find out/reconstruct the Valarin name of Thúringwethil*.
I am totally a responsible grown-up human being. Sometimes.

(There is neither the full name, nor even the vocabulary for its parts. Diem perdidi. Does Þûhur-inigwî-þîlez look convincing? *squints*)

*Well, I cleaned the dishes first, at least.

This sounds like the perfect order of priorities to me. ;o)
And the name looks very convincing, but then, I'm anything but linguist,

The longer I think about it, I think that Þûhur should more properly be Þûrukh or Þûrug, which would bring it closer to Khuzdûl (which might have uruk according to an early name for Moria) and Adûnaic (which definitely has ugru). Since Adûnaic has adopted a lot of words from Khuzdûl, and Khuzdûl was invented by Aulë who maaay have based it losely on Valarin, that makes it practically attested. I'll probably change inigwî, which looks kinda too much like Ingwë. (Ingwë was probably called Ingwë before the Eldar ever met the Valar, but it may still confuse people.) Maybe I'll just go with Þûrugilêz or something.

WHAT AM I DOING.

This brought me a much-needed smile. I agree with Winterwitch: it's a good order of priorities to me, too.

(My "I'm a responsible adult, no really" when I was in college was, "Let's study Sindarin right before bedtime!" *looks up at the clock at 2am* "Oops." No wonder I never got anywhere with it…)

Okay, this may help: the name is not actually Sindarin, but Doriathrin (http://folk.uib.no/hnohf/doriath.htm):

Thuringwethil "(woman of) secret shadow" In LR:393 derived from a stem THUR- "surround, fence, ward, hedge in, secrete". The first element, thurin (*thurina?) is apparently a variant of Ilkorin thúren "guarded, hidden" (*thûrinâ?) Gwethil would seem to mean "shadow-woman", clearly to be referred to the stem WATH "shade" (LR:397). Notice that as in Sindarin, primitive intial w- comes out as gw- in Doriathrin; but unlike the system in Sindarin, initial g does not become lenited to zero in compounds (under THUR, the Sindarin/"Noldorin" form of Thuringwethil is given as Dolwethil, not **Dolgwethil). The stem-vowel of WATH has been umlauted to e in gwethil; the umlaut would be caused by the i in the ending -il, that would seem to be a feminine ending of some sort (cf. perhaps Quenya -il as in tavaril "female dryad" [contrast masc. tavaron], LR:391 s.v. TÁWAR).

Unfortunately there is not enough attested Valarin (http://folk.uib.no/hnohf/valarin.htm) to say what 'Woman of secret shadows' would translate to, but that wouldn't have been Thuringwethil's original Maia name anyway; just what the people of Doriath called her. Assuming that her 'marred' name was the opposite of her 'unmarred' name, perhaps something like Sebeth-igwiš ('air', "white'.)

LOl, I realize that this is not helping either of us to get our chores done today!

I think you have your priorities well in order. (There is a reason housework is known as drudgery -- because it never ends. ;)

Totally OT but I love your icon. :)

You really did make me smile. Thank you, I need that today!

I could have said this:

I have a house that direly needs cleaning. [Fill the blank with description of fannish or ficcish behavior.] I am totally a responsible grown-up human being. Sometimes.

I insist that it is good for one!

I knew what Thuringwethil means (though I wasn't aware that it was Doriathrin rather than "normal" Sindarin), and that there isn't enough Valarin to translate it. Igwiš doesn't necessarily mean "white", by the way; it appears in the middle of Dâhan-igwiš-telgûn, but "high white point" is actually an ungrammatical (folk-etymology) translation of Quenya Taniquetil, not of the Valarin word. The meaning of the original Valarin isn't given. Might be the same, might be something else entirely.

I'm actually reasonably confident about using Þûrug. If there aren't enough words, you're forced to derive them somehow - it's ridiculous to work with a corpus of just 20 or so attested words! The alternative would be using a negation of "bright" - dušamanûðân, "marred", seems to contain aman-, "unmarred", so apparently the literal translation would be the other way round ("unblessed" and "blessed" rather than "marred" and "unmarred"), which would give us either a prefix duš-, affix -ûðân, or circumfix duš-X-ûðân. I'd go for the circumfix just for the heck of it. The name for the moon, Phanaikelûth, gives us phanai (more likely than phanaik) for "bright", so with assimilation and all, that might give us something like *dušuphanauðân "unbright" -- yeah, I like Þûrug better. ;)

Not today, either! XD

It's what I say often enough. No point in sweeping that up, it's going to be dirty again in an instant. So I save all true cleaning for Special Occasions (TM). But there are just too many crumbs on the floor right now... (Also, pine needles and cat hair.)

Me too! And I haven't used it in such a long time! :)

Actually my therapist taught me to do stuff that makes me happy instead of stuff that has to be done. This changed my life totally. I'm much less organized, but at the same time endlessly more happy.
