Oct. 24th, 2015 09:55 amFirst off, Happy belated birthday,
juno_magic!
Second, STAR WARS TRAILER. So far, I wasn't that excited by the franchise revival, but now I really am! See, I knew that the EU was no longer canon, but of course it was still what I had in my head as "that's what happened after RotJ". The trailer suggests that things went completely differently, and I can't wait to find out how and why. Well done! And the visuals are back to the old Star Wars feeling! X-Wings! OLD HAN AND LEIA! WHO ELSE IS EXCITED, HUH?
Third, The Last Kingdom! Jörg is disappointed that they quickened the pace so much, compared to the book. I'm OK with that. It is a bit rushed, but the changes they made are (so far) consistent. I guess they had to grow Uhtred up and send him on his quest within the first episode (i.e., one hour). Uhtred is waaay too pretty, in an Orlando Bloom kind of way. I also imagined Ragnar the Older completely differently. Ragnar the Younger, on the other hand, is spot-on. And the acting is fine. The intro is fantastic. The costume design, on the other hand, is awful. Completely fantasy and not in a particularly good way. That's really a pity. (On the other hand, I thought the costume design for the first episodes of GoT was pretty shoddy, too, and nobody else seemed to have a problem with that.)
It really is damn violent, though. I mean, the books are violent and I knew what I was getting into, but good grief, they're not pulling punches. *shudders a bit*
Fourth, NaNo is approaching. I'M NOT READY. *flails*

Date: 2015-10-24 11:34 am (UTC)Please, what exactly is The Last Kingdom? I feel like having lived under a rock, but this ist he first time I hear anything about it. It sounds like something I might like a lot, though.
*hands you a huge dose of good NaNo vibes*

Date: 2015-10-24 12:31 pm (UTC)Have you heard of the Saxon stories by Bernard Cornwell? They've been translated into German too (Das letzte Königreich, Der weiße Reiter, Die Herren des Nordens, Schwertgesang, Das brennende Land, Der Heidenfürst, Der sterbende König und Der leere Thron; maybe you've seen one of those titles appear in a bestseller list at some time or another). In a nutshell, they're about the Danish attacks on the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and Alfred the Great's dream of uniting them into one England. They're not for the fainthearted - there's slaughter, rape and other horrid things galore - but really well-told, and it's a period in history that I find extremely fascinating. If that doesn't sound offputting, yes, you might want to check them out! As of last Thursday, they also got their own TV series on BBC Two.

Date: 2015-10-24 08:15 pm (UTC)Thanks! I have heard he series mentioned sometime, but never got around to take a closer look. I haven't read much by him (eyes the mostly unread Sharpe saga on the bookshelf) but liked what I read, and the period is just down my lane; I got myself a reading sample right away. I don't mind the horrid things if they have a purpose, and the story doesn't wallow in it in a glorifying manner. I'll keep a lookout for the series, too; thanks to Amazon VoD we're having British series available sooner or later most of the times. I hear you on the costume design, though. *g*

Date: 2015-10-25 12:21 pm (UTC)Go for it then! It's my favourite current book series so I'm happy to share the squee. ;) And no, the horrid things aren't just there for kicks and giggles, but because it's a violent time. I enjoy the writing style too, as well as the plots - not in-your-face clever, but nonetheless with surprising twists every now and then. The books are also well-researched - the author is making liberal use of artistic license, of course, but he's doing it in a way that's consistent with the setting. Something I appreciate in historical fiction just as much as in fanfic. ;) And probably part of the reason why I'm so annoyed by the completely crazy costume design.

Und das ist doch eine BBC-Co-Produktion! Die KENNEN doch Leute, die's besser wissen! ;_;
