First off, Happy belated birthday, [livejournal.com profile] juno_magic!

Second, STAR WARS TRAILER. So far, I wasn't that excited by the franchise revival, but now I really am! See, I knew that the EU was no longer canon, but of course it was still what I had in my head as "that's what happened after RotJ". The trailer suggests that things went completely differently, and I can't wait to find out how and why. Well done! And the visuals are back to the old Star Wars feeling! X-Wings! OLD HAN AND LEIA! WHO ELSE IS EXCITED, HUH?

Third, The Last Kingdom! Jörg is disappointed that they quickened the pace so much, compared to the book. I'm OK with that. It is a bit rushed, but the changes they made are (so far) consistent. I guess they had to grow Uhtred up and send him on his quest within the first episode (i.e., one hour). Uhtred is waaay too pretty, in an Orlando Bloom kind of way. I also imagined Ragnar the Older completely differently. Ragnar the Younger, on the other hand, is spot-on. And the acting is fine. The intro is fantastic. The costume design, on the other hand, is awful. Completely fantasy and not in a particularly good way. That's really a pity. (On the other hand, I thought the costume design for the first episodes of GoT was pretty shoddy, too, and nobody else seemed to have a problem with that.)
It really is damn violent, though. I mean, the books are violent and I knew what I was getting into, but good grief, they're not pulling punches. *shudders a bit*

Fourth, NaNo is approaching. I'M NOT READY. *flails*

I am not excited yet - simply because of being busy and thinking of other things - but soon I will be! :D

Yes, I'm quite excited for the new Star Wars. It's a whole new galaxy far, far away!

WHO ELSE IS EXCITED, HUH? I am! I grew onto this fandom through my husband and haven't read any of the books except one, nor do I know a lot of other things, which might be a blessing this time as everything will be new and shiny to me without any expectations to be met, except that I will be well entertained. I'm a bit afraid of seeing old Luke, TBH, after having seen some recent pics of Mark Hamill, but as I never fangirled him this will be bearable in any case, I suppose. *lol*

Please, what exactly is The Last Kingdom? I feel like having lived under a rock, but this ist he first time I hear anything about it. It sounds like something I might like a lot, though.

*hands you a huge dose of good NaNo vibes*

It's all new and shiny even if one has read the books! \o/ I have no clue whether Luke will even make an appearance, though. For all I know, he may have gone MIA shortly after RotJ (perhaps searching for the history of the Jedi Order and never coming back?), which would explain why the Jedi are just a myth to the young folks in the trailer...

Have you heard of the Saxon stories by Bernard Cornwell? They've been translated into German too (Das letzte Königreich, Der weiße Reiter, Die Herren des Nordens, Schwertgesang, Das brennende Land, Der Heidenfürst, Der sterbende König und Der leere Thron; maybe you've seen one of those titles appear in a bestseller list at some time or another). In a nutshell, they're about the Danish attacks on the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and Alfred the Great's dream of uniting them into one England. They're not for the fainthearted - there's slaughter, rape and other horrid things galore - but really well-told, and it's a period in history that I find extremely fascinating. If that doesn't sound offputting, yes, you might want to check them out! As of last Thursday, they also got their own TV series on BBC Two.

It looks like Luke is in the third trailer, in the snippet with R2-D2 when a mechanical hand from a cloaked person reaches for the droid... but he certainly doesn't look like he's living a public life!

Thanks! I have heard he series mentioned sometime, but never got around to take a closer look. I haven't read much by him (eyes the mostly unread Sharpe saga on the bookshelf) but liked what I read, and the period is just down my lane; I got myself a reading sample right away. I don't mind the horrid things if they have a purpose, and the story doesn't wallow in it in a glorifying manner. I'll keep a lookout for the series, too; thanks to Amazon VoD we're having British series available sooner or later most of the times. I hear you on the costume design, though. *g*

Oooh, could be! You're right!

Go for it then! It's my favourite current book series so I'm happy to share the squee. ;) And no, the horrid things aren't just there for kicks and giggles, but because it's a violent time. I enjoy the writing style too, as well as the plots - not in-your-face clever, but nonetheless with surprising twists every now and then. The books are also well-researched - the author is making liberal use of artistic license, of course, but he's doing it in a way that's consistent with the setting. Something I appreciate in historical fiction just as much as in fanfic. ;) And probably part of the reason why I'm so annoyed by the completely crazy costume design.

Ooh, that sounds better and better! I read one or two Sharpes in English so far, but at a time when I was just a beginner reader of original novels, so I don't have any memory about style or quality. I could tell the historical detail was well-researched, though; back then I've been the total Naval fiction nerd (still am in between being a Tolkien nerd), and my background knowledge of the time was well-founded. I actually started reading in English because the series I wanted to read hadn't been translated...
Do you know about the quality of the translations? I'll read it in English, but my husband prefers not to if possible, and would just love this very much, too.

Die Klamotten tun echt weh, gell? ;_;
Und das ist doch eine BBC-Co-Produktion! Die KENNEN doch Leute, die's besser wissen! ;_;

Thank you! I've had the bestestest birthday ever here in Nebraska with my best friend. And a birthday party in Riverside, Iowa, the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk, with some old fandom friends last weekend. Turning 40 is a lot of fun this way!
