Hmmm. So far my opinion is somewhere between the lines of "What the FUCK?!" and "Awesome". The whole evening went in waves. Some scenes I loved, some scenes I loathed, sometimes I couldn't have cared less.
All in all, the whole thing reminds me way too much of the Episode I/II disappointment.
Everything I might say now can be considered spoilerish, so just to be safe, I'll use lj-cut.

Hm. The timing was really weird. Some scenes seemed to be somewhat long, and somehow there were several (and they all seemed to be of roughly the same length). I think the music-video scene was really, really too long. The whole temple thing was rather scary, too pseudo-religious for my taste. And Morpheus speech was really... it was impressive, but... scary. Ugh. Like a sect guru or something.
The fight scenes were of course wonderful to watch, but they, too, seemed a bit long. Not boring or anything, but if they had been a few minutes shorter, that wouldn't have hurt either. But they were great, so that's fine ;)
Zion... reminded me really a lot of the Star Wars prequels. The senators, especially. And I think the landing scene was rather poorly animated - the people moved like wooden puppets. Come on, you can do better!
I liked the philosophical talks though. I liked the first part for its deep thoughts, too.
The chase... again, so long. It was like, "Ok, we need 15 minutes dancing, drumming and sex, 20 minutes for fights, 15 minutes for deep thoughts, 20 minutes for chases..." Have they used some kind of formula?
I thought it was great how they showed that even Neo is just a part of the system, that he is a means of control just like the oracle and the Matrix itself. And I loved Agent Smith - the only real rogue factor left, I think.
All in all, I still liked it. But I know I won't be able to watch this one as often as I watched the first one. A bit disappointing.
Oh well. Maybe if I watch it again...

Hmmm.
Insgesamt erinnert mich das irgendwie and die Episode I/II-Enttäuschung.

You know, maybe it was because I was confused hearing they were making Matrix sequels, because I had thought the ending of the first one was fairly self-explanatory, but the thought that kept popping up in my head was, "This feels like fan fiction." Like fan fiction of the original movie. Granted, it was fanfic by the -creators-, but still, it had that whole kind of feel to it.

The sex/dancing scene I could definitely have done without. (That was Ruka's GAH! MY EYES! moment.) So, okay, these are people who spend much of their time living in fear for their lives, and tonight they're having a party, and the first thing they think to do is start taking off their clothes and rubbing up against one another? Methinks they were trying waaaay too hard to appeal to some certain demographic here. I dunno what that demographic is, but we definitely didn't fall into it. ^^; And, you know, I don't consider myself prudish by any stretch of the imagination, but sex scenes in movies have a habit of making me uncomfortable. Maybe it's because 95% of the time they're superfluous, or seeing something that (IMHO) should be respected by keeping it private plastered all over the screen, or maybe both, I dunno.

The friend we'd gone to see it with concluded at the end of the evening, when we walked out into the parking lot, "Okay, that was either a) really deep or b) really pretentious." Heh heh.

Still looking forward to ROTK more, but I might have to spend some cash to see the last one in November, just because I want to see what happens. :\

Right *g* Now that everything I thought I understood about the first movie has been proven illusion, I just haveto see how they conclude it... if there is a conclusion at all...
Dunno, the sex scene didn't annoy me as much as the dancing/ raving party thing. Actually, I would have understood if they had put in more of the former and less of the latter. But maybe that is because such a mass of people being so seemingly rather out of control (imagine a panic breaking out in the temple at that point of time! The machines wouldn't have to do anything but cleaning up afterwards!) make me really, really uncomfortable...

Ah well.

I like your friend's comment, though. Seems to hit the point pretty well...
