Visited Jörg's mom today. We ate tasty spring rolls (she makes them herself!) and watched the last hour of the Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition. I think we got her hooked - at least she asked us to bring the sequel when we next visit her.
Afterwards, we saw that Amadeus was running on ARD, so we watched that. It was... highly amusing (aside from the fact that I could have slapped Mozart whenever he laughed. Good grief, what a horrible sound). Except that my little obsessed brain was reminded of one of [livejournal.com profile] applegnat's Vain Songs episodes (where Rúmil is, um, really pissed off because whatever he touches, Fëanáro made it). Which made the film all the more hilarious. We had to watch it in Music class in grade 7 or so and I hated it then (... because of the laugh. Some things never change...), but it was really rather enjoyable. I loved Salieri's death glares.
Strange, however, that they didn't dub the English opera pieces. The Italian must be Italian, of course; But hearing the Magic Flute in English was... ODD. (Especially after having been dragged to see it performed in the original German four times back when I was a kid.)

In other news, I made a huge post of recent scans in [livejournal.com profile] livingshapes. I'm currently having so many projects and ideas at once that it's driving me insane very distracting.

Yup. Afterwards, I could practically mentally re-enact it just by listening to the 'soundtrack'. (Come to think of it, that may well be when my habit of inventing music videos or scenes from stories to pretty much any song I like started...) And after the fourth time, I convinced my parents that there were certainly other nice operas one might visit as well... (which promptly earned me a visit to Aida and Rigoletto).

I think I could still do that ;)
But then, I think this is the only opera you can actually watch in Cologne without cringing all over, or having to bite back tears of laughter/pain.

Really? I've never seen an opera in Cologne, actually. I think. Are they that bad?

Well, that throws me in some kind of moral dilemma...
[livejournal.com profile] vakdad, who is the father of my best friend [livejournal.com profile] johnnymuffin, plays the violin in the opera orchestra. So he takes us to the rehearsals from time to time, which is absolutely lovely of him, but it also means I've seen quite a bunch of their productions and... well, most of it sucks badly, I can't help it.
Just before christmas, they had an "Orpheus in der Unterwelt" - Kölsch Style. After the premiere, they were booed at for minutes and minutes. I felt so bad for them. The opera was gone very, very soon.
What else? "Die Liebe zu den drei Orangen" was marvellous. "Don Giovanni" was completely unneccessary. I never got "Die Karmeliterinnen". Then there was "Das schlaue Füchslein" - I think I was too freaked that it actually deals with sodomy to take in anything else. The Bassarids was actually really good. But I fell asleep during Wagner's Ring (which, I think, is quite remarkable).
Bottom line is that they try way to hard to be "new" and "fancy" and stuff. They love to go overboard with ideas. But actually, the Schauspielhaus is even worse in that aspect. They once had an Othello that played more or less in a river. Right in the middle of it. And don't get me started on Hamlet...
