Moments, Immortilized
Sep. 17th, 2003 12:04 amIf a tree falls in a forest and nobody is there to witness it, does it really happen? If nobody observes the shadows, do they still look like we would expect them to look? If one moment passes, will it ever come back, or is it as unique as a fingerprint?
And what happens if someone notices, and prevents the moment from passing completely by recording it, be it in word or picture?
At any giving moment, we are surrounded by the most trivial, ordinary, strange, sad, funny and magical things and events. They're storming in and you focus on one thing. But what if you focus on something most people would ignore? What if from those trivial, ordinary, strange, sad, funny or magical things you choose the one that seems least important and thereby make it important?
A white horse running through a birch forest. The first snow beside the autumn-colored leaves, the sky so brilliantly blue as though it had been painted. A fence surrounded and partly covered by green plants and photographed in a way that makes it look similar to the Great Wall. A man on horseback before a black mountain-range behind which the sun slowly rises. Two dogs, one attacking, on withdrawing, sightly out of focus, but you can see the fear in the one dog's greenish eyes. Shadows under trees, buildings, palm leaves. Horses. Tents. The carcass of a deer run over by a car.
Things one might notice but forget, not even realizing one noticed them. And then someone comes and immortalizes them.
The universe is indeed full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.
If I could write like that, paint like that - if, at least, I could take photos like that!
And now I don't only admire Viggo Mortensen because he is Aragorn (and drop dead sexy as well), but also because of his art and his poems. Say what you want, the man is brilliant. Hmmmmm. Marry me!
*sigh*
Ngah. One more of these late-at-night-weird-brain-overload-gotta-tell-posts. Sorry. Ignore me.
