Third semester, first week
Oct. 17th, 2003 08:19 pmIt started well enough, even though - of course - one of the classes I chose won't take place, and of course, it's Cultural Anthropology again. Either the classes don't fit into the rest of my schedule, or they're cancelled last-minute. Great. So, as last term, I'll only have one Anthro class. *sigh* It will get better once I'm through with the Japanese basics, I know.
Speaking of which, remind me why I wanted to learn a language where turning a verb into the passive mode turns it into a snake of a word? Tsukareraremashita. Honestly.
(Another nice one would be shinaremasen deshita - "He has not been died". In Japanese, you can say that. Right, and all your base are belong to us.
I should try and read my aunt's christmas card again - maybe I can now. But to be honest, I don't dare - what if I still can't read it? That would be too depressing after 10 months of studying...
Kulturgeschichte Japans sounds like two things: 1. a very interesting class; 2. a lot of work. (And Niehaus-sensei rockses our sockses.)
So does "Materiality and Virtuality in Cyberpunk".
Half the Cyberpunk course also takes Japanology. Hmmmm. Good thing William Gibson wasn't into Texas.
It makes sense that the one book for that class that I at least half read already was taken off the schedule due to the short semester. Schismatrix. That's so unfair - I liked "Kabuki Intrasolar" and freefall jujutsu and Carnaval. And of course, my favorite line: "Mr President? This is the diplomat! I want a parley!"
Back to Kyûdô today. We didn't even forget that much during the vacations. By the end of class,
kaneda and I both could shoot again. Yay. Even though I'm probably still making a lot of mistakes, I just love releasing the arrow. Even over three meters distance and with only a makiwara as target, it's a really good feeling to let go after building up all that tension, preparing the shot, aiming, waiting. Very satisfying.
And we aren't the absolute beginners anymore, but the somewhat advanced :) and one of the new newbies even asked us for help! *sorta proud*
And I really think about getting my own equipment. But how to pay for it? I'll need Kendô equipment soon as well, and that's even more expensive. Gah.
Speaking of Kendô, no practice tonight. :( I was there, no one else was, so I suppose I've missed something by not going to practice most of the vacations...
Instead, I was asked for the way twice (and this time I knew where the places they asked for were). Waiting for the others who didn't turn up, I watched Mars next to the Uni Tower and as always, I had the centaurs in mind. "Mars is unusually bright tonight."
At this time of year, beech forests look like Lothlórien. Silver stems and golden leaves and a soft wind. Walking last weekend, I half expected Haldir to show up between the miniature Mallorn trees. "You breathe so loud we could have shot you in the dark." He didn't. Instead, I got a cold breathing so loud in the crisp air at the heart of Elvendom on Earth.
