Three accidents on the 50km between Cologne and Solingen. Not only can't people drive when it's snowing or raining; they can't even drive when the sun is shining. Gah.
Got my voting notification today, for the European Parliament election on June 13th. On June 13th, I'll be in Veldenz. That is, I'll return on June 13th - it's a Sunday, after all, and I'll have to be back in university on Monday - but I don't know whether I'll be back in time, so I suppose I'll have to apply for postal vote. That's rather scary. It's no problem, of course; but it says on the notification that you have to be away from home for a good reason (bold) to apply for postal vote, and I've got a shrewd idea they won't count a LARP weekend a "good reason". Which doesn't matter, of course, because they won't know. But it's still weird.
While I was doing groceries and waiting in line, I suddenly heard a young boy (somewhere between 5 and 7 years, I guess) talk about me. He was standing in the line behind me with his mother, and suddenly he said, "Mom, is that the Lord of the Rings ring?".
I grinned, turned around and said yes, it is.
"Can I see it closer?"
So I took of the ring and gave it to him. Goodness, this face. It was a cute little guy anyway (rather like
Jenny Dolfen's young Celegorm), and he was absolutely awestruck.
He looked at it for a while, then said, "But you were not invisible."
I grinned even more. "No, but as you see, the ring is silver, and the writing doesn't need fire to be visible either."
He held it up to his eyes for inspection. His mother was grinning about as broadly as I was.
"Then it isn't the real one?"
Now I couldn't help but laughing. "Of course not." I didn't know whether he knew
The Return of the King, so I didn't mention that it got destroyed.
"But it looks like the real one. Can I keep it?"
"Um, no." I stooped so our eyes were level, and hissed softly, "It'sss my preciousss."
He shrieked and almost dropped it; then he grinned again and handed it back to me, and then I finally could pay my groceries.
Why, without the traffic jams resulting from all those car crashs, I would have missed such a sweet conversation...
