Began watching Romeo & Juliet yesterday. Yup, the one with Leonardo DiCaprio. I'd tried to watch it before, but after the first five or so minutes, I couldn't stand it anymore and escaped. Well, my dearest told me it's getting better and it's all in all a great movie, so I tried again yesterday. And what can I say. Considering that modernized productions of Shakespeare usually aren't my cup of tea at all (the clash of modern images with old-fashioned language doesn't work very well for me for very long), I liked it, as far as we got. There's something fascinating about it. And since it's all slightly overdone, the overdone language fits it quite well. (Because it just doesn't work having 20th century people in 20th century clothing driving 20th century cars through 20th century cities speaking 16th century English living 16th century concepts without acknowledging that this isn't ordinary everyday language and behaviour nowadays. I think this is why I disliked Hamlet 2000 when we watched it in university. It Just Doesn't Work. Shakespeare's plays are quite timeless, yes, but you still have to acknowledge that times change, or it will seem ironic at best and ridiculous at worst. Either use that clash and work with the irony and slightly over-do everything (of course, that's something Baz Luhrmann is good at, anyway), or you just keep the story and give them modern lines, or... I dunno. But maybe that's just my escapist OMG renaissance!*squee* mind.)

Also, I knew that Mercutio was the same actor as Link in The Matrix!

On a totally unrelated note: Billy Boyd is coming to Ring*Con, too! Now, please, please, please - David Wenham? Pretty please?
