... or, why I occasionally love my brother.
(Now remember, my brother has never actually read the Silmarillion. He knows from it only what can be glimpsed at in the LotR, and what I told him in my mad love for the book. As said love is really enormously large, the "brief" synopses of certain episodes are many. Especially as he studies history, and it's ridiculously easy to get from most chapters of world history to some place in the Silm, really. Aaaanyway...)
I have no idea how we got to talk about this - oh wait, actually I think I do. My parents were talking about their vacation in Finland, and how they'd like to do that again, hey, wouldn't that be an idea for next year's 25th wedding anniversary, but that's in November, you don't get any midnight sun then, if you get any sun at all, well, but there might be Northern Lights---
Brotherthing (BT): So, do you think the Elves on the ice saw Northern Lights?
Moi: Um... nah.
BT: Why not? That would be really pretty.
Moi: But Northern Lights are particles from solar winds colliding with stuff in the Earth's atmosphere, right?
BT: Um. I think?
Moi: So, there was no sun yet, so there wouldn't have been any solar winds.
BT: Ok. ... ... ... *hopeful* How about St Elmo's Fire?
I now have the mental image of Fingolfin's host running around with funky little flames dancing on their spears. >_> Thanks, brotherthing.
