... right. Now that's out of the system, let's go on to different things.

Today was one of those rare beasts: A day when neither Jörg nor I had any late-afternoon appointments or duties. A day, therefore, that could be used for a nice walk (as it's beautifully sunny at the moment - well, not at this moment, as the sun has set by now, but generally speaking).
We went to Müngsten to take a look at the new bridge-park - during the Regionale 2006, they changed a lot there, and neither of us had been there for some time: My last visit there was in 1999 with my scout troup when we were showing our Swedish and French guests around the region, and Jörg's was even further back.

And now I have to spam you all with photos of the beautiful Bergisches Land where I live and grew up and which, apparently, unintentionally, I love.

I thought about giving you teasery thumbnails first, but it's over 50 photos, so that'd take ages to load. So you'll just get the usual more or less snarky linklist.

This is Schloss Burg, the castle of the Counts of Berg who ruled these parts till Napoleon dropped by. The year before last, they had a huge LotR festival there, but it was a week before Ring*Con, so I couldn't afford to go.
It's very nice though. School classes and visitors from afar always get dragged there by the dozens.
Now when we were there, everything was closed down for the evening already, so we could only go into the outer ring.
The outer ring is pretty, too, though.
But, yeah, the actual castle is behind these walls.
The castle in its current state was rebuilt, btw; the original castle was destroyed by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War.
The treacherous trees, of course, give away that these pics were actually taken in early June last year.
Because despite our early spring, we're not that far along yet. :D
Templum I
Yeah, these things stand around kinda randomly.
You get a nice panoramic view from in there.
View across Unterburg. Very creative name. It means "beneath the castle".
Hurray for pseudo-elvish architecture!
Storm-light.

And here's today's pictures from Müngsten. With the second Templum.
Including the obligatory road photo.
So, yeah, this is the kind of landscape...
... in which I grew up.
And played cops and robbers...
... and Three Musketeers...
... and Ronja the Robber's Daughter and all that.
A glimpse of the great Bridge of Müngsten (originally Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke. I have no idea whether that should be translated as Emperor William-Bridge or not.)
The old path. They made a new one during the abovementioned Regionale.
These brooks are more impressive when we had a proper winter and there's melting snow.
Another look at the old path
...yes, we do have a lot of these.
Whut? Why? (the stone says, roughly, "go back".)
Siamese tree
Jörg's the enlightened guy at the end of the path.
Templum II
And our amazing bridge again. It links Remscheid and Solingen, both fairly important cities (if you're into smithcraft), shortening the way for the railway by a whole 33 kms.
It's occasionally compared to the Eiffel Tower.
I wonder why.
Inside the Templum
Perfect location for a LotR fanfilm, innit?
Including mushrooms!
Wupper valley
Some picturesque tree
Another of those snow-deprived brooks/ mini-waterfalls
From Kyrill with love
Good thing the bridge is more stable than this sign.
WTF happened here?
A river island. One of those things all kids want to spend a night on, complete with campfire and all.
None of them get to do that, as it's a nature preservation area.
It used to be really dirty, actually, but it's nice and clean now that there's no more industry in the valley.
(There used to be a lot of forges and such, in the olden days. The valley got its name from two famous brothers who made excellent swords, apparently.)
And now it's solid! Solid as a rock... erm, sorry 'bout that.
Very romantic, at any rate.
Shiny!
I told you we had a lot of those.
That's the same one, just looking into the other direction, though.
The river Wupper again
This is probably pretty scary when you walk here at night.
At this point, we said simultaneously, ... Until it joins some larger way/ where many paths and errands meet./ And whither then? I cannot say.
Still round the corner we may meet/ a sudden tree or standing stone/ that none have seen but we alone...
Still round the corner there may wait/ a new road or a secret gate...
Troll rocks
And a sleeping Stone Dragon.
Another scaaary tree
"He who turns in a circle"
"cannot see the wish" - I have no idea what these are supposed to be, but I really like them. - Actually, they put up a lot of iron plates with riddles on them along the way, which kinda adds to the hobbity feeling of the place. Me likes.
Alien markings!
Some creepy mythological tree
Remains of the old industrial Müngsten (I guess)
And the Templum from the other side of the river.

And this, in the end, taught me three things: I) actually, I do love the place where I live; II) much as I love the sea, I couldn't live there forever; not, at any rate, when "sea" comes with "flat land", where I feel all paranoid like the sky's too close and I can see three days ahead who's coming to visit, because I need mountains! Mountains, Gandalf!; III) we should take such walks much more often.

Also, walks are good against headaches.

Off to bed now.

Bah, mountains. ;) You get used to the 'three days ahead', at least that gives you a chance to hide. As for the sky being too close... disagreed. I start feeling claustrophobic in the more mountaineous regions of the country because the clouds are always hanging too low overhead! I need that Northern German sky - and the flat land. Hills on either side and clouds overhead, no way.

It's really amazing how the perception of such things can differ according to where you grew up.

/post-midnight rant.

Schööööne Fotos, allerdings. Doch. Vier icons sind auch schon fertig.

... WHERE are you going to hide, with no mountains around? It's not like your visitors can't see YOU just as well!

I don't think the visitors have X-ray vision, though. It's sufficient to close the door. ;)

But then you're still inside your house where they can find you!

True, that. But they'll go away if you don't open the door.

If you're lucky. And then you have to stay inside for another three days until they're finally out of sight?

Nah, when they leave they're too offended to look back.

By the way, how do you hide? After all, you only see you have visitors when they're ringing your doorbell already. ;)

Oh, I can see them from the top of the mountain when they're still three valleys away! After that, getting off the mountains and hiding in some bear cave is a matter of minutes ;)

I completely agree. For me, having grown up near the Swabian Alp (does one call it that in English? I don't feel like checking), even Bonn and Cologne is sometimes a strange feeling when looking out of the train windows, I can see flat land for miles on one side. I need my valleys and hills and mountains!

And the pictures are very beautiful ^^!

Very nice pictures! If I ask nicely, can I took a few of them as my collection? I have a lot of pictures that I use when I start to draw... backgrounds usually. I took over 400 pictures from Italy for that reason only and sorting them out. *grins*

And yes, walks are good against headaches!
