Cultural Anthropology, "UNESCO World Heritage from an ethnologic point of view". This is a presentation on the problem faced by the city of Cologne a few years back when they planned to build some high-rise buildings on the opposite side of the River Rhine and the UNESCO threatened to take the Cathedral off the World Heritage list because it's integrity was endangered.
We had two undramatic presentations yesterday and one that annoyed me, mainly because the handout and ppt were full of typos - and because the presentator kept talking about how Robben Island symbolises the victory of democracy over suppression.
I hate to break it to you, darling, but South Africa was a democracy even before the end of the Apartheid regime (oh, and it's Apartheid, not Arpartheid). It was just a limited democracy, much like the United States before the end of segregation, or any democracy before women's vote was established, really. DEMOCRACY IS NOT AUTOMATICALLY GOOD. Argh!
Argh!

This is our fugly campus, as far as you can speak of a campus with the University of Cologne.

Every even year there seems to be the need for a student revolution. Oddly enough it always starts around

Oh look, they're seizing the rectorate again.

Quote: "The policemen just tried to enter the building. That's not very nice. Fortunately we could stop them, but we need more people to block the stairs. So go there!" No thank you.

Focus on Chaucer with Prof. Wilcockson, the academic teddybear from Cambridge (who learned in Oxford)!
My brother and I found out (by way of some totally subtle questions) that he actually was a student of Tolkien and Lewis. Squee!

An illustration of a classroom topic: The analogues of the Wife of Bath's Tale. In all of them, the loathly lady demands a favour; in one of them, Arthur (rather randomly) "offers Gawain in marriage"...
Illustration von etwas, was wir gelernt haben: In den Vorlagen zur Wife of Bath's Tale bietet Arthur, nachdem datt hässliche Weibsbild einen (nicht weiter ausgeführten) Gefallen verlangt, ziemlich willkürlich Gawains Hand an...

Driving into Cologne in the evening.
Noch eine Fahrt nach Köln am Abend.

Shake reduction isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Yay Cinema!
Quotes of the Day:
Text: ful semely after hir mete she raughte
Translation by student: "She smoked very seemly after her meal?"
(ok, the joke here is that rauchte is German for "smoked", and this student apparently didn't realise it meant "reached.")
Prof. Wilcockson: "De Consolatione Philosophiae was translated into English by King Alfred, and Chaucer, and later again by Elizabeth I, at a time when we had royalty who could read books."

In other news I'm PISSED OFF because we won't go the Viking Festival in Iceland after all (this year). Because flights (the only part we have to pay for, remember) are too expensive now. WELL YES. PERHAPS YOU COULD HAVE ORGANISED THAT RIGHT WHEN YOU GOT THE INVITATION IN EARLY MARCH RATHER THAN WAITING THREE MONTHS BUT TELLING EVERYBODY YOU WERE TAKING CARE OF IT. 680 €! I flew to Japan and back for 680 €! Honestly. I love the people, but sometimes they fail so much at organising that it's PAINFUL.
Two seminars I would've had to skip in that week have been cancelled because the professors are away - like that wasn't a good omen! Should've known it was too good to be true. Wyrd bîð ful aræd.
Well, at least I won't have to make last-minute Viking garb then, and can take care of my cracky forest kami garb instead.

Iceland is that expensive because there's only a very limited number of companies who do flights there. So of course they make it expensive, because people need to book it anyway.

Date: 2008-05-22 10:20 am (UTC)Yes, but you can get them cheaper if only you book them well ahead. *sighs* Last year they booked the flights in February and got the tickets for 250 €.
But this year stuff got in between, apparently, because obviously people aren't capable of multitasking and booking flights would totally take too much time away from planning the next market or something. Grr.
