It's a new year, it's a new start

Happy New Year to you all!
Party with Jörg's ex-co-students was surprisingly enjoyable. I had been rather worried that I'd feel bored and out of place between all the 40-something chemistry Ph.D.s - grown-up, non-nerdy company, ewww!
The grown-up, non-nerdy 40-something scientists spent most of the meal (fondue, mmmmmmh) talking about Firefly, Indiana Jones, Highlander, the Thursday Next books, and whether or not there is chemistry between Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. Also, one of them is writing a werewolf novel and has two SciFi novels published (that refuse to sell, but oh well.).
Go figure.
After the meal we went to the Cathedral to watch some fireworks (amazingly enough, nobody managed to smash the huge windows with their fireworks, though certainly not for lack of trying); after the fireworks we played SuperMario Kart and CloneWars: Lightsaber Duels on the host's Wii.
(There are few things more humiliating than seven grown-up people sitting around a TV set waving their Wii-motes in avid concentration. Can't look dignified while you're having fun...)
Somehow I'd thought grown-up, non-nerdy scientist company would be more difficult to socialise with.
Hope you all had a good party, or, if you live in some timezone in which it's still 2008, have a nice party ahead of you!

Date: 2009-01-01 02:29 pm (UTC)Although there were more fireworks in past years - and it's actually even nicer to watch them from a certain distance (a roof nearby, say, or one of the bridges over the river Rhine) so you can see all the fireworks around the central city and cathedral, not just the bit that gets shot up right in front of the building ;)
Thank you!
