Artwork for *gasp*money
Nov. 14th, 2010 09:46 pmI have so far been hesitant to try and "sell" my artwork, but I figured that it might have a chance if it's for a good cause. So, here goes!
The first five people to comment and contribute to CfL in some way get to request artwork by yours truly. If you don't know the sort of stuff I produce yet, you can check it out here (Tolkien fanart) or here (other watercolours - a lot less). As you can see, my main fandom is Tolkien (yeah, I know, you never guessed that ;)), but for this challenge I'll also try my hand at any other fandom, as well as original or roleplaying characters, as long as I get useable descriptions.
EDIT: All full now, yay! \o/ Thanks for playing!
So! What should you do if you're interested?
1. Check whether there still is an open slot. (This is assuming that there actually are as many as five people who think my artwork is worth $5 or more. ;))
2. Claim that slot. You do not yet have to give me any artwork details at that point unless you want to.
3. Now you make your contribution. That can be a flat donation of at least $5 (or the corresponding sum in your country's currency) to your cancer-related charity of choice - popular examples would be the American Cancer Society, Cancer Research UK or Deutsche Krebshilfe. But any other organisation that does research on cures, helps patients and their family, or works against cancer in other ways, is just as fine.
If you don't have those $5 lying around, there are non-financial ways of contributing, too: For example, you could get swabbed with the DKMS (also operating in Germany ;)) which might enable you to save the life of someone who suffers from leukemia some day, or do volunteer work with some other charity. Or you can come up with some other cool idea that I didn't think of. Just let me know which way you choose!
You do not have to tell me how much you donated if you don't want to. You do not have to send any money to me personally. No, not even the postage.
4. Now you ponder the artwork you want to request. Due to exams, I won't be able to get started before December 5th, so you have a couple of weeks to think of something!
There are a few limits I'll ask you to keep in mind, however:
- Real life is a demanding monster and I'd like to be able to have finished these by Christmas, so I will do no more than three characters and no complicated backgrounds this time. Size of the original will likely be about DinA5, i.e., 148 x 210 mm.
- If you aren't certain that I am familiar with the character(s) - or if we're dealing with book characters and you can't be certain that my imagination and yours coincide ;) - please provide some description, both of the outward appearance and some defining traits that may help me depict the character(s) more closely (e.g. "she's a cynic", "he constantly feels watched", "they have been in love for ten years"). If you would like to have a particular scene from a novel, poem, fanfic or whatever illustrated, that is perfectly okay, but I'd ask you to describe the scene to me (or quote it in full) along with any other information you think necessary because I'm not certain I'll have the time to read the text in question - and I am absolutely certain that I won't be able to familiarise myself with a new fandom. If I need more information than you give me, I'll ask. :)
- I am bad at drawing animals, so you can request artwork with animals in them ("I would like a painting of Celegorm and Huan on a hunting trip"), but should be aware that results might be
- I am bad with anatomy, so you can request artwork that features a lot of it ("I would like a picture of Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy making out on a bearskin rug wearing nothing but their socks and house ties*") but again shouldn't expect the result to look particularly good. So you may want to request something else.
- I also cannot use reference pictures well (which in part contributes to the two problems mentioned above ;)) so please do not expect people to look like particular actors. For example, if you're a fan of the BBC Merlin TV series and you'd like a picture of Morgana and Gwen yelling at each other, I'll certainly try to make them look like Kathy McGrath and Angel Coulby, but I can't guarantee that they'll actually be recogniseable. So you may want to request something else.
At any rate, you've been warned.
- Artwork will be done with pencil and watercolour. I'll show you the scanned work here or per e-mail (if you'd like to keep it secret), and I will also mail you the original. I'll hopefully be done by Christmas so things will be sent out sometime between Christmas and New Year's, but I won't be giving any guarantees on that because of exams and real life and stuff. If I'm still not done by late January, though, you'll get some sort of bonus feature, though.
- Oh, right! In order to send things out, I figure I might need your address, eh? As comments on this post are not screened, please send me an e-mail (lyraforeniel at hotmail dot com) or an LJ message. And remember to let me know if your address changes before I'm done with the painting!
I will also post this on deviantArt (unless all slots here are full before I'm done hunting down all typos and repair all links and stuff ;)). I'll edit this list so you'll (hopefully) know whether there still are free slots left. If against all expectations people will request something faster than I can keep track of and you happen to land on non-existant slot six or seven by no fault of yourself, we'll work something out so you can get something yet - not, however, by the end of December or January. More likely I'll be staring at five empty slots for hours to come, I know.
Well. Yeah.

Date: 2010-11-14 10:47 pm (UTC)I'd also be willing to offer the slot to someone else - I have no doubt that you'll find more than five people who want it. I'll just donate something and sit on the "waitlist" for a while :)
