oloriel: (tolkien - cooking >:D)

I wish my body could send clear, understandable signals instead of being kind of vague. The past week, I've constantly found myself wondering: Am I hungry or about to be sick, cold, or getting my period? Dear body, pls to be a little more specific, kthx.

In other news, as the hubby is sadly Not Here, I have in absentiam started the Christmas bakery, arrrrrrr.
(Normally stuff that has to do with baking or otherwise requires strict adherence to recipes is done by the husband, who, as a chemist, is very good at strictly adhering to recipes. My predominantly intuitive approach to kitchen work is just fine in cooking, where you normally can check how it's coming along and in fact, most recipes don't actually care whether you use one carrot or three - but baking generally doesn't allow for that, unless you want to have imploding muffins*.

Eh well! I'm only making honey cake (wtf, LEO, Honigkuchen ≠ gingerbread, are you stupid or what?) so it should be ok. Hopefully this is the last year in which I have to buy the honey for that purpose...

*Yes, that really happened. Better than exploding, I suppose, but still. >_>

Imploding muffins... oh dear! Luckily, we Spaniards get away with almond pastries and nougats for Xmas - straight from the shop! Xmas puddings come from the in-laws. The only thing I might have a go at is a sort of light ring-shaped cake for 6th Jan, but it requires orange blossom water, not sure if they sell it here. I'll see if I can find it, and have a go.

Over here, you'd probably get orange blossom water at a Turkish deli store. Don't know if you have one around?

Actually I enjoy the Christmas bakery (as it only has to be done once a year, it's still every bit as special as it was when I was a kid ;)) - otherwise I could get that stuff from the shop, too - I'm just not very good at it. Too impatient too separate eggs (or whisk the whites properly, if the separating actually worked), and too rebellious to stick to the recipe in terms of amounts of flour and sugar and what-have-you. It's best if someone else prepares the dough and I just cut and glaze the cookies... a friend of mine is the total opposite: She loves mixing the dough, but hates working with it afterwards.
By now I suspect Christmas bakery is meant to include steps that someone hates and someone else doesn't. That way, people are encouraged to get together for baking so everyone gets to do what they like best, spreading the spirit of solidarity, friendship, cheer and other holiday-sy stuff... ;)
