Because first I want to ramble about my last visit to the gyn before I try to bring some sort of structure into my unsorted memories.
So, gyn visit!
It started with the CTG printer doing the popular paper-jam game about ten minutes into the whole process, causing all the measurements of said ten minutes to be unintelligible and thus demanding a second turn. The CTG is a machine that measures a) the heartbeat of the baby and b) the contractions of the uterus, such as they are. You get two sensors strapped to your bump and lie around for however long it takes. To make things a little more interesting, they may turn on the machine's speaker so you can hear things. So I spent twenty minutes listening to what sounded like a gentle gallop on a forest road (or some other kind of unpaved, springy ground). Occasionally interrupted by Offspring kicking against the sensors, which sounds like a nasty scratchy screechy rattle. Perhaps it's the sound of one of the riders being snatched by a fell beast, or somesuch. Well, you have to think about something when you have to spend twenty minutes lying around with only weird sounds from your belly for entertainment, right?
Afterwards, the gyn noted that Offspring is again/still lying head-down atop the cervix, which is again/still under pressure. This time, however, she was cooler about it. As he's been doing this for three weeks without actually coming out, she says chances are that things are perfectly stable, because otherwise nothing (either on the CTG, which didn't catch any undue contractions, or in terms of cervical canal length, which at 5.2 cm is way outside the critical range of 3 cm or less) implies premature labour. In about two weeks, Offspring should be doing exactly what he's doing now, so it appears he's just a hasty sinker. In practical application this means that I can breathe more easily than most mothers-to-be at this point because the uterus is no longer pressing against my midriff, but need to use the toilet more frequently because my poor bladder is squashed flat already.
Unfortunately, no adorable ultrasound face shots could be taken because the head is hidden in my pelvis. :( I could show you adorable ultrasound genital shots, I suppose, but I'll leave the poor little fellow some remainder of dignity!
Gyn spent quite some time determinedly searching for some artery or other, which, between all the bones and stuff, was impossible to discover, let alone to measure. She did find it eventually, though. Not that there was any doubt about it being there and working, as neither I nor the fetus were showing any signs of, you know, some major artery not functioning...
Offspring is now weighing around 1600g, so he has to gain another 1000g at least until July. I just wonder where the additional size/weight will go - I mean, my ribs on the one side and my pelvis on the other kind of limit the options, and as for forward - well, I do realise that it must be possible, but somehow it's hard to imagine that the bump will grow even pointier. It already seems to be defying gravity as it is! One day I'll just topple over because I can no longer balance the whole thing.
In other but related news, the whole parental allowance issue is a complex pain in the arse and who, in this time and age, is capable of definitely planning ahead for the next (up to) 14 months? Aside from teachers and other public servants, that is? Everyone demands flexibility, just the state didn't notice. :p As if I knew when in the coming 14 months I might or might not find a job. Gnah gnah. Yeah, I know, mustn't grumble, at least we do get a little money from the state. (Although the entire maths behind it are insane and useless. Your reality, it is not my reality. And I say this as someone who generally appreciates alternate realities. :P)
