First things first.
I am twenty years old, and since mid-December I have, for the first time of my life, an actual boyfriend with whom I actually want to spend as much time as possible (which, alas, is too little as it is). I am going to university and have, theoretically, my own, albeit dark and tiny, appartement.
It should not be so hard for my parents to get used to not seeing my at least three times a week.

So, The Last Samurai. Except for some really poor CGI/rendering for the arrival at Yokohama, I love it. Very much. I'm yet trying to decide whether I like it better than ROTK, which is possible.
Only non-spoilers (IMHO) here for now, so no cut.
Even though I don't have anything again Tom Cruise and think he was very good in this movie, I doubt this will lead him to his desired Oscar. If anyone from that movie gets a best actor statuette, probably it will be Ken Watanabe. My personal guess.
I was very impressed with the casting for Emperor Meiji, who looks exactly as I knew him from photographs. Shichinosuke Nakamura was an excellent choice.
And I do likethe Japanese Legolas Nobutada (really, when he's introduced, he's got this "If anyone mentions Orlando Bloom now, I'll shoot ya!" look)... my brother wondered about his "strange bow", so I got to explain Kyûdô to him. Heh. (My brother was also delighted to recognize a few words of Japanese, namely "sumimasen" and "gomen nasai" and "desu". Jörg and I managed to understand a bit more. You know the three semesters weren't totally wasted when you're able to understand at least a few sentences...)
And I cried a lot, yes. It really is sad, because, of course, you know all the while how it's going to end, because, after all, as a student of Japanology you're prefectly aware that the Meiji restauration was succesful and the way of the Samurai ended. But still you hope that they'll win, and it's really depressing. And the final scene is a real tear-jerker, although it's also a bit too Hollywood-y, with that sudden mindshift in the Tennô.
Anyway, it was "jorry good". Men in hakama! Swords! Armor! Horses! Arrows!

Ich bin zwanzig Jahre alt, und seit Mitte Dezember habe ich erstmalig einen richtigen festen Freund, mit dem ich tatsächlich möglichst viel Zeit (was ohnehin schon zu wenig ist) verbringen will. Ich gehe zur Uni und habe, im Prinzip, meine eigene, wenn auch dunkle und kleine, Bude.
Es sollte nicht so schwierig für meine Eltern sein, sich daran zu gewöhnen, mich nicht mindestens drei Mal die Woche zu sehen.
Eruverdammich.

Also, The Last Samurai. Bis auf ein bissel wirklich miserables CGI/Rendering bei der Ankunftsszene in Yokohama war er wirklich gut. Wirklich wirklich. Ich versuche noch, mich zu entscheiden, ob ich ihn jetzt lieber mag als ROTK, was tatsächlich im Bereich des Möglichen liegt.
Erstmal spoilerfrei (finde ich jedenfalls), also kein cut.
Obwohl ich nix gegen Tom Cruise habe und ihn in diesem Film echt gut fand, kriegt er sicher trotzdem nicht seinen ersehnten Oscar. Wenn den einer aus diesem Film kriegt, dann wohl Ken Watanabe. Nur so meine persönliche Annahme.
Der Schauspieler für Kaiser Meiji war genial gecastet, er sah wirklich so aus, wie man ihn von Bildern kennt. Shichinosuke Nakamura war eine hervorragende Wahl.
Und ich magden japanischen Legolas Nobutada (wirklich, als er vorgestellt wird, guckt er, als wollte er sagen, "Wenn jetzt irgendwer Orlando Bloom erwähnt, erschieß ich ihn!")... mein Bruder wunderte sich über seinen "komischen Bogen", also habe ich ihm erklärt, dass das beim Kyûdô so ist. Heh. (Mein Bruder hat auch stolz berichtet, ein paar japanische Wörter erkannt zu haben, nämlich "sumimasen", "gomen nasai" und "desu"... Jörg und ich haben natürlich etwas mehr verstanden; man weiß, dass drei Semester nicht völlig verschwendet waren, wenn man immrehin ein paar Sätze verstehen kann...)
Und ja, ich habe geheult. Es ist wirklich traurig, besonders, weil man natürlich die ganze Zeit weiß, wie es enden wird, denn als Japanologie-Student
weiß man ja, dass die Meiji-Restauration erfolgreich war und der Samurai-Weg endete. Aber man hofft trotzdem, dass sie es schaffen, und das ist ein wenig deprimierend.
Auch die letzte Szene ist wirklich traurig, obwohl des Tennôs plötzlicher Meinungsumschwung denn doch etwas zu Hollywoodisch wirkt.
Jedenfalls war es "guränzend". Männer in Hakama! Schwerter! Rüstungen! Pferde! Pfeile!
