And it's a REAL relief that I don't have to invest (much? any?) time into that particularly delightful pastime because today I got the news that one of the other English teachers is on extended sick leave and I'll have to take over half his lessons (grade 8).
So it's seriously good to have one less thing on my plate in my so-called spare time. I'm hearing bad things about this particular grade 8...

I did substitute teaching for a couple of years and I often got bad reports about a particular class only find out that the teacher I was replacing was the problem, not the kids. Nothing you can do about that if it is only a day or two job, but if it is a longer assignment, you can sort out the worst problems in a remarkably short time, by following your own best judgment and instincts. (Then everyone will think you are a miracle worker!)

Yeah, but if all the teachers who work with this class agree in their assessment, then it doesn't seem likely that a single teacher is the problem. >_>

Eep. Good luck with the grade 8. Not sure whether to say 'maybe that class just has a teacher without good classroom management' or 'sometimes a group is just like that'. (Saw both while substitute teaching - most classes I had zero problem with. But there was one year that collectively had every teacher in the district wondering what was in the water the year they were born...)

That is, in fact, the exact wording that one of the teachers I was talking to used -- "There must have been something in the water the year they were born"! So they really might be one of those classes. Eep!
