olorielRather interesting and rather depressing practice tonight. Since Sensei still hopes to be promoted national instructor soon, he today wanted to check whether he still knew all kata. We had to run along.
Now I haven't been to practice for a long time, and I haven't learned any new kata for even longer a time. Heian Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan und Godan, Tekki Shodan, Bassai Dai, Hangetsu, Enpi, Kanku Dai, Jion and Nijushi-ho I still knew, of course, having practiced them for eternities. Tekki Nidan I learned at some seminar back in 98, and forgot it, of course. Ji'in I had learned in Canada, and almost completely forgotten. Kanku Sho, Bassai Sho, Sochin, Gangaku and Chinte I knew fragments of, never really having learned them but at least having done them some time or other. Gojushi-ho Dai and Sho, Tekki Sandan, Jitte, Unsu, Meikyo and Wankan: complete mysteries. I mean, of course I saw them performed, of course I know tiny parts of them: But tiny parts indeed, and most of the time I just tried to stumble not too obviously, at least get the correct arm up and the correct leg stretched. I still like to flatter myself because I usually managed to move to the right direction, and get arms and legs sorted out while watching rather than afterwards: I like to believe that I have gained a certain instinctive feeling of probable next move. But even so, I felt very stupid and ignorant.
The only good thing was that Doris, my very special friend (oh, the irony) was even worse, messing up even kata she really should have known. I know, I know, schadenfreude contradicts the spirit of karate; but you don't know Doris, you haven't been sneered at and been treated patronizingly by her for years. Leave me that little triumph.
Hm. At least I now can say that I did all 26 Shôtôkan kata in one day, and survived. And I resolved to learn at least a few of them, now.
