I always thought I was too stupid to get it, but apparently it belongs that way.

Nope, not just you ^^ We're still boggling over the people who think it's the greatest animated masterpiece of the 20th century...

while neon...while eva is fantastic in many ways, i would really feel that "Steamboat Willy" was the greatest animated masterpiece of the 20th century...becuaqse, without the greatness of steamboat willy, there would be no eva...

Hm... though I've got to admit that having been there first doesn't mean having been best. I mean, of course "Steamboat Billy" principially prepared the way for any other animated film following. But let's be honest, that doesn't make it a good film. For that, it also needs a good story, and the quality of the images might be taken into account as well...

but there is something to be said about the differences of what is considered good, and what greatness can entail. Eva is good, mostly in part to it's complex and utterly confusing storyline, but steamboat willy is great, because of the fact that someone could put together frame after frame of an animated sequence without any past precedent. i would not argue that steamboat willy was good, becuase it really wasn't all that good, it was a mouse whistling while driving a boat...however, i would say that steamboat willy is great because it was the most groundbreaking piece of art in the form of the moving animated picture in the last century.

that and people tend to like eva, because people think it's cool to watch something that makes no sense whatsoever.

Well, the latter is certainly true - how else could one explain the success of The Matrix (yes, I know, it does make sense in parts, but altogether, it's a big unconceivable mess of philosophy, special effects, bad acting, not so bad acting, a tangled story and coolness...)

Yes, of course the greatness of Steamboat Willy lies in the point that someone had to have the idea of putting painting frames together like this. But eventually, the idea of using the shortcomings of our own physical perception is even older than Steamboat Willy - would that make a laterna magica the best animated picture? (Because that sort of is the precedent...)
