The roads are surprisingly empty today
considering it's Tuesday, and rush hour time:
I drove but half an hour, and already
I see Cologne's cathedral before the sky:
A black and looming shadow. If the rising sun
were caught between its spires, it would look
Like Barad-dûr. But it stands in the West;
the rising sun would be behind my back.
Besides, it's May, too late for a red sunrise
at ten o'clock.
It's time to leave the highway;
someone before me seems to be asleep
inside his car, at least that's how he drives.
Some cars ahead I see a former classmate;
but she's away before we get to meet.
The traffic lights turn green, the queue moves on.
The Institute of Japanese Culture: The only place
to definitely find a parking lot:
So from here on I walk (arukimasu).
As I step out of the encircling bushes,
there is a shift in light, a shift in time;
There's only grass and trees, gilded by sunlight,
and linden pollen fly like errant snowflakes.
The only sound, for now, seems to be birdsong;
I am the only person here right now.
Somehow I've stepped into some hidden realm,
some sort of strange dimension. I walk on,
and through the trees that lighten as I go
I see the road again and cars and houses,
and posters of Neo and of Trinity
salute my return into reality.
A strange one this is, anyway:
To my left trees and meadow and the birds,
to my right side there is the street.
Cars hurry past; but like a stranded UFO
lies the cover of some past car's wheel
upon the road, though with sickening cracks
the passing cars play with it, till it lands
out of their turning wheels' remorseless reach.
I did not know that birds could sneeze, but here
sneezes a magpie, so it seems they can.
The Park of Human Rights: "the" war is over;
the signs and candles are no longer there,
but I remember them and why they stood there.
I join the stream of students as the hustle
between the buildings, hastening to class.
The lecture hall's half empty: I am early.

Not worth anything, I should guess; but somehow I felt the urge to write this down before RCL, so there... (that's your fault, Kaneda - had you been there, I wouldn't have written anything, I'm sure!)

I definitely can't stand heat. It's just 25°C or so, but I already feel totally powered out, can't focus, and so on. And it's still spring. If I remain so sensible to heat, that's gonna be a difficult summer.

It seems that we can see the solar eclipse on Saturday. At least partially - they say 88,5 % for Düsseldorf, so it should be similar here. Now let's see if I make it out of bed at 5:30 - after I missed the Mercury passage and the lunar eclipse already...
The best view in Germany you'll have on Sylt, they say. Bäh. But then again, the island threatens to break into pieces during one of the next storm floods. I'll just take 88 per cent, thank you.

How weird is it to have your supper sort of sponsored by the DTG? Soup, noodles and pineapple slices. Tolkien Day Leftovers. Now if that ain't nerdy.
