Sequels That Suck
Jul. 9th, 2004 04:28 pmI really shouldn't have gone to the cinema yesterday instead of working on my presentation. Well, I never should go to the cinema when I have a presentation to prepare; but this time, it wasn't even worth it. I mean, I liked the first Spider-man movie EXCEPT for those three or four totally superfluous cheesy love/ angst dialogue stuff.
The second Spider-man movie contains three or four cool, brilliant, enjoyable action scenes and otherwise ONLY totally superfluous cheesy love/ angst dialogue stuff.
It calls for a parody, but to do one, I'd have to face the love/ angst dialogue shit again. Oh, what the hell. The things we do out of boredom and annoyance.
Yes, boredom. I've seen some films this year that made me secretly think they should have been shorter(Hidalgo and Lost in Translation, namely), but neither of them were so screamingly pointlessly boring for such long periods of time. They were good, the just weren't as good as I'd hoped. But this one makes Star Wars: Episode I look brilliant. Ilúvatar gracious.
The action stuff in Spidey 2 is good. Really good. The jokes are funny. That's what Raimi is good at. And he had a cool villain and everything. But he absolutely sucks at the "oh we must add emotional depth and adolescent angst" part. And unfortunately, four fifths of the movie consist of exactly that. (And I doubt very much that that was only the case in the German version. Or do they talk about the Iraq war in the original?)
