oloriel: (if there's no movie about it...)

I haven't been to the cinema for ages. Honestly. I love going to the cinema, and I happily remember the days when I went at least once a week, and now all the good (and bad but entertaining) movies come and go and I don't manage to catch them. Bah.
As a result, I haven't seen movie trailers in ages, either.
Well, I finally decided to check the trailers of movies that are currently in theatres here and that I want to see. (You know, just for the pretty images.)

It was amusing, really.

And I always like sharing my amusement. So...

Blood Diamond. You know, I had a plotbunny like that once. It wanted to be a comic, but as I'm too impatient for that, I started writing it in strange prosish poetry (or poetic prose?). The stone showed up in Brazil, not in Africa, though. The story also included Fëanor coming back from the dead, an Empress of Japan (this was before the birth of Hisahito, you see), and the end of the world. Ah, good times.

The Queen. Listen to the background music in the second half, please. It is James Newton Howard's Restoration suite. The melody is stolen from the Folia, a Portuguese fertility dance (~14th century). I am still pondering the significance of that.

The Fountain. The concept of this was really interesting, I thought, but the trailer looks so damn esoteric that I don't think I can stand watching the movie without cringing. In spite of Hugh Jackman. Alas.
Bonus information: Seeing movies with titles like The Fountain and Curse of the Golden Flower running parallelly (can you even say that?) somehow make me crave Glorfindel/Ecthelion. Strange, that.

... right. Got work to do.

I'll react to the icon meme when I have decided on what icons of mine I actually do like best. >_>

We saw The Fountain. At the core, it is an interesting story, but I do think that it was a bit overwrought at times. It takes place in three simultaneous places: the present, the past (through the main character's wife's novel), and in some weird dream state where the MC's wife is symbolized as a tree and he is trying to save her life by sailing to a star in a big gold bubble.... It was pretty, but I thought that there was too much of the third bit and not enough of the first two, to really ground the movie in a good strong story. It felt a bit full of itself, like, "We're making a speculative fiction movie and look how profound we're being!"

Plus, there was a part where the MC was doing this tai chi sort of exercise with the star in the background, and--I don't know if you have these adverts in Germany--but it made me think of those adverts for arthritis medicine where there's always three old ladies doing tai chi in a field. Not the intended response, I'm sure.

Despite this all, I did like--but not love--the movie. It's the only time in fiction--movie or print--that I've seen my beliefs about the afterlife expressed at all, much less so well. I think that with a little more investment in the characters and story (and less tai chi), it could have been truly fantastic.

A much better fantasy movie, if it comes to your area, is Pan's Labyrinth. It's a Spanish movie, a surprisingly dark fantasy set during WWII. Bobby and I saw it last night, and it was great.

I saw the trailer for 'Blood Diamond' and I have to say it made me smirk. Blood Diamond... a modern Silmarillion? *Grin*

Yeah, movies with names like 'Curse of the Golden Flower' and 'The Fountain' do give me similar thoughts! But then, I'm *always* craving Glorfindel/Ecthelion! :P
