A while back,
My own contact to bees was limited to Anglo-Saxon magic spells for attracting or repelling colonies of bees (the oddities you can find in the English seminar library are boundless). But I thought, hey, you know, you could totally keep bees now.
The basic difficulty was how to convince the boyfriend, who'd have to live with me. And the bees. Right?
I thought.
Then one day the boyfriend said, "I have a bad idea, but let me tell you about it. Soo, Iris has bees now...."
Iris is the girlfriend of the carpenter who has frequently had to help us save the house. And her bees got Jörg thinking we could totally have bees too...
Aaanyway, today I went to see Iris, and her lamb, and her bees. (The lamb's mother died, and as Iris got the ickle one through the first days, it now believes Iris is its mother and bleats like mad whenever she's away and keeps following her around.) She got a second colony from someone, but she had to move them into a new hive.
And I got to watch! ♥ I got to see both queens, too ^_^
Dealing with bees is rather meditative. They were peaceful, too. And really fascinating. And the raw honey I got to try was divine.
I want my own colonies now.
Next year perhaps...
