Sooo. I'm afraid I'm finally succumbing to the lure of the portable music playing devices. I want one. Badly.
The moral issue (aside from not having the money I'd need to aquire one) is the following: I can't decide whether I'd rather want an iPod or an iRiver. The iPod looks better, is more likeable and, apparently, easier to handle. The iRiver, on the other hand, can not only store but also record music and speech, but the handling must be a science in itself. The price is about the same for either, so that's not helping any.

I've heard bad things about the battery-life on the ipod as in, you don't get much to start with and then after a few months the battery life drops considerably, so you have to fork out for a new battery.

The Creative Zen Touch (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000811E4C/qid=1117837778/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl/026-3039912-7650055) has 12 hours of battery life, I haven't heard any horror stories about any battery-life drops, it's got just as much storage as the iPod and it's cheaper.

I got a plain ol' generic .mp3 player, which, while incapable of playlists or things of that sort, is ridiculously easy to use (you plug it into your USB port and that's it) and is not only much cheaper but has a better battery life given that it just takes regular AAA's. (I do recommend investing in a pair of recharchables and a charger, however.)

My roommate maintains that his iPod is the best thing that ever happened to him, but personally I found that the device itself didn't remotely make up for the awful technology you have to install in order to use it. iTunes and my computers DO NOT get along.

Ngah, I know, mp3 players are way cheaper too. But they don't have nearly as much disk space as I'd like to have (seeing as I'd rather take along some sort of player thing than my CD collection when I go on vacations, which is fairly often, and my CD collection is certainly too large for any of the generic mp3 players)...
Ah well. I'm still undecided.

I haven't heard much about the iRiver, but I own an iPod Mini 6gb. I probably charge it once every two or three days. The clickwheel takes a bit of getting used to, but it's nice because it does double duty as volume control and menu navagation.

The only thing you should check on is to make sure you get an AC adapter if you get an iPod. I don't know if they come included with the regular iPod, but I had to buy one for my Mini..it only cost about $20, but if you don't have it, you have to charge via your computer, which can be a pain.
