Fine. I deleted yesterday's rant, but today, it's going on air. Let there be Drama.
"It really sucks when a canon character, particularly a major one, is OOC."
Which totally doesn't apply to at least half the characters, even the major ones in their respective canons, on DF. Oh, no. Of course not. Especially not those your puppets like to interact with. Or those of your clique. Never.
"And the way she treats people that she should respect-"
Whom, please?
"The worst example was the dog-petting thing, really"
And that is necessarily OOC? Because someone who tries to convert people's way of treating house-elves would never ever tell them how to treat animals? Sorry, I don't get it.
"If we're thinking of the same person, then she hadn't even read the bloody books when she joined."
Has our dearly beloved Eöl- and Saeros-typist ever read the Silm? Just asking. Or did she just need every possible reminder about the character because it's so far in the past and she can't remember anything?
Would you swear that all of our LesMis muns have actually read the book/s, or don't you think one or two might just be running on the musical and/or one of the many movies?
By the way: She had.
"...especially about her trying to break the magical rules of the universe."
PROVE. IT.
Seriously? The last thing one needs are immature, inane, selfish teenagers, who stick only to the rules they like or made up themselves, who're incapable of getting their own lives sorted out and wine about not being respected when they've done nothing to deserve respect, telling them what to do.
And let me just add something entirely for myself, because I've been swallowing it for far too long:
YOUR. PRESETS. ARE. NOT. FUNNY. ANYMORE. They were never really funny, and now that the amusement has worn off, they're really just annoying.
The same goes for the Eruawful "your mom" joke, which wasn't even funny when I was in kindergarten and CERTAINLY shouldn't be funny amongst people who have been out of kindergarten for a while.
Also for "O RLY", but that's not your fault alone, so I'll let that pass.
Anyway, rule of thumb - and listen up now, because this might be important:
Passing fads are only funny as long as they gracefully pass when their time to die has come at last.
You know what? Excuse my Middle English, but FUCK YOU.

Mich lässt so etwas immer zweifeln.

Date: 2006-04-19 05:38 pm (UTC)We all have issues with each other. That's people. There are puppets who irritate me, and typists who can (but don't always) irritate me, and I'm sure we all have problems we haven't voiced. But the real last thing we need is to start taking it behind backs.
I, personally, absolutely hate this trend of bringing DF to BRPS. Bringing one's problems to a wanking site says worse things about you than the person you're bitching about. If you have a problem with someone, what you need to do is take it up with them, not bitch about them where they can't see, or -- worse -- take it to a ranting community and do it where they can.
Most of us are quite young, and I know we also pride ourselves on being quite mature. And I think that, on the whole, we are. But this sort of thing isn't. We're better than BRPS, and we ought to act like it.
Can I just reiterate? Concerns with a person ought to be brought up with that person. Politely, reasonably, to their face.
And as for these particular concerns? I do think you're right. I know that my characters are all varying degrees of annoyingly OOC: other people can speak for themselves. What I think is being missed here is that Irritating =/= OOC. OOC is usually irritating, but it doesn't go both ways.
--There, look, someone finally got an opinion out of me. Joy.

Date: 2006-04-19 06:00 pm (UTC)- and of course it's ok to be immature sometimes, but there's different degrees. Fangirling immaturely is one thing, cowardly (and by cowardly, I mean BRPS, for example) and/or immaturely attacking others is quite another. Yes, I know, I'm doing much the same thing just now, but at least it's a) on my personal journal and b) open for discussion (not only for friends/members). Besides, I'm facing a whole group of people, whom I probably won't catch on their own anyway, certainly not long enough to talk to them before they'd go on ignore mode. So.
Concerns with a person ought to be brought up with that person. Politely, reasonably, to their face.
- Thank you.
Unfortunately, it doesn't always work, but it should at least be the first step. And perhaps people could learn that it might be helpful to react equally politely and reasonabley, rather than saying whatever equivalent of "fuck off" suits them.
And of course, not every irritating character is OOC (... Christine!! comes to mind). And not every OOC character is irritating either, it seems - not any more than the IC character would be, at any rate. Cf. my Fëanor, who's definitely not entirely canonically correct, and yet people seem to be ok with him - or I just missed the BRPS thread, of course. Whatever. At any rate, "OOC" can't always be used for a reason why one doesn't get along with someone. Most characters on DF are OOC, and yet someone brings the "OOC" argument up whenever they don't like what someone else does. Which I find somewhat strange and rather unfair.
- Yes. I feel honoured.

It doesn't mean I bear any ill will to anyone, it just means I'm fucking annoyed. Surely I'm allowed to wank over that.
You're free to talk to me if you want, but I don't have a lot to say on the matter.

Date: 2006-04-19 06:29 pm (UTC)I'll be glad, like you did, to tell people exactly what I think of them to their face; and (are they reading this? of course they are, it's draaamaaah) I agree with you. The running jokes have run their course. The immaturity in OOC is irritating. Unfortunately, to get nearly any play in-character, one must associate with the players OOC, and to be honest I didn't join the game to make friends. Friends were a side benefit. But not everyone has to be my friend; but they don't recognize an IC/OOC divide either.

I know your opinion, you know mine now. Not much point in talking, it seems, unless you want to add something.

Date: 2006-04-19 06:38 pm (UTC)First of all, the 'incapable of getting their own lives sorted out' comment was downright cruel, below the belt, and had absolutely no relevance. That's really the most upsetting thing to me. Insult my puppets, fine. But some people have gone through a lot of shit in life. I'm not saying you haven't. And I'm not saying you don't understand. But if you do? You really should think more before saying something like that.
Second of all. Different things are funny for different people. Personally, political jokes? Don't do anything for me, whether or not I understand them. Don't tell someone that something is not funny just because it is not funny to you. It's not true that it 'isn't funny'. You just don't appreciate the humor. There's no problem with that, but if you have a problem with that, you're just as guilty of the sins of not dealing with problems and peeves as the rest of us are.
Third of all, and this is the only thing I will say about the character Hermione. The thing that annoys me most about her is when she as a character is used in a moderatiing capacity. It is not Hermione's business to run the main room. The moderator is Leany, not her puppet.
Oh-- wait. I lied. One more about Hermione. The thing about respecting people? In the books, I seem to remember her respecting authority, and people who were her elders. There were times when she was under extreme duress, or when she knew they were wrong, or it was dangerous. But she was an extremely respectful young woman. There's OOC, and there's OOC. That is too painfully out there for me to accept. So I should have said something to Leany, yeah. But I didn't say anything at all up until yesterday. I'm no more guilty than you are of anything.
