olorielOh ye gods and little fishes, my exam results finally showed up. And I passed. And the two missing results are decent, too (1.7 in Japanese, 1.3 in English Literature (with Prof-whose-style-I-do-not-get-at-all, too! Adding a touch of feminist ranting was apparently a good idea.).
Assuming that I did the calculations correctly, which isn't entirely certain because the guide on the uni page is somewhat unclear, my final grade would accordingly be:
2.1.
Measured by my expectations from the start, that's a disappointment; measured by my re-assessed expectations after the bloody thesis, it's a relief. On the whole, the disappointment factor prevails, but eh well. Not much to do about it. And: At least it's over. Yes, NOW it's over!
Time to write job applications, I guess. And hope I find someone who's nice and/or stupid enough to employ someone with a suspiciously round belly and an unexciting degree in Weird Stuff. *le sigh* Complications, complications.

Date: 2011-01-27 03:47 pm (UTC)Leider stellt sich aber vordergründig nicht die Frage, ob sich das lohnt, sondern die Frage, ob ich eine Alternative habe - und die habe ich eher nicht. Es sei denn, ich möchte mich darauf verlassen, dass ich in absehbarer Zeit eins der vielen ungeschriebenen Bücher vollende, dafür einen Verlag und eine gigantische Leserschaft finde UND vom Gewinn nennenswert was abkriege. Oder dass wir im Lotto gewinnen. Oder dass Jörgs Gehalt verdoppelt und der Ausstieg aus dem Ausstieg endgültig beschlossen wird, so dass ich mir fürderhin ein Dasein als Hausfrau/ Mutter/ Kunstschaffende leisten kann.
Erscheint mir alles nicht völlig realistisch...
Von daher sollte ich eher versuchen, irgendeinen Job zu kriegen, egal, ob sich das "lohnt". Im besten Fall kann ich dann vielleicht bis kurz vor der Entbindung arbeiten und nach den acht Wochen Pflicht-Mutterschutz zumindest in Teilzeit zurückkehren. Ansonsten halt nicht. Wenigstens Erfahrungspunkte wird's wohl geben. Vielleicht finde ich ja auch was, was man von zu Hause aus tun kann. Whatever.

Date: 2011-01-27 08:28 pm (UTC)(Owari is used in Japanese just like "The End" is used in English. An yes, the Japanese use exclamation marks (and question marks, and semicolons, and parantheses) just like we do. Their quotation marks look different, though, as do their full stops.)

Das mit dem Job (bzw. der Notwendigkeit dessen) kann ich gut verstehen. Versuchen würd ichs an deiner Stelle auch. Vielleicht denken sich die Leute ja: "OK, sie kriegt jetzt ein Kind, dann haben wir sie nachher erstmal für eine Weile."
Ist das bei euch eigentlich auch gesetzlich vorgeschrieben, dass der Personal-Mensch NICHT fragen darf, ob man Kinder möchte? (Und natürlich schon gar nicht, ob man schwanger ist) Bei uns ist das nämlich verboten.

Im Bewerbungsgepräch würde ich darauf auch nicht eingehen (also, möglichst nicht lügen, aber eben das Thema versuchen zu umgehen), falls es doch versucht wird. Da aber natürlich Mutterschutz (inkl. Kündigungsschutz :D) erst greift, wenn der Betrieb Bescheid weiß - und es ja auch relativ bald offensichtlich werden wird - und ich denen wenigstens eine Chance lassen will, würde ich es wohl erwähnen, wenn sie mir denn dann tatsächlich einen Vertrag anbieten sollten. Dann habe ich immerhin das gute Gefühl, nicht gelogen zu haben, UND das gute Gefühl, dass sie mich ja genommen HÄTTEN... und wenn sie mich dann immer noch wollen sollten, umso besser!

If you need something you can do from home to tide you over, you could perhaps try translating non-fiction (manuals, technical stuff, etc.). I've heard that it pays better than translating fiction (which publishers tend to assume is a labour of love and should therefore not be paid properly), and surely there can't be too many people around who can translate stuff from or into Japanese?

There probably aren't many, but more's the pity, I'm not one of them either. My Japanese is LOUSY (now I can admit it! ^^) even when it comes to everyday language, and technical or other specific forms of the language I've never even looked into... Not that I'll tell that to any potential employers, but I wouldn't want to wager on my awesome Japanese skillz ;)
